Posting fish

Quick question for those members who post their pleco's

Not something I currently do but looking into as my Dad is also looking to post his Angel fish as he getting several requests each week.

Do you post your poly boxes inside a cardboard box or do you just wrap it with brown paper.

If you use a cardboard box what size you do use?

I am looking at the 8 ltr poly boxes atm

i use poly box and outer cardboard box with heat pack double bagged with bagg buddies,and pure oxygen,and sent as late as poss ,but neither post when theres a frost and dont feed the fish 24 hours before you send .

Depending on the number of fish, will depend on how you package them.

I generally use either a 6" x 6" x 6" or 8" x 8" x 8" cardboard box.

I line with bubble wrap, and use crumpled newspaper as insulation.

I always use a bag buddy, double bag, and use small rubber bands to round off the corners of the bags to restrict the fish from getting trapped in there.

Bag buddies help to sedate the fish, oxygenate the water, and helps to keep down ammonia etc.

The trick is more air than water.

Starve for 24 hours before posting, which obviously helps with not polluting the water as much.

I have learned (the hard way) that the heat packs should be popped into a paper bag or envelope (I researched this online) as this helps the heat pack to keep working. Personally I just use a single layer of newspaper and loosely wrap the heat pack once around, and tape in place. Since doing this, I have had positive reports on the heat packs.

If the weather is said to be cold I don't post, there was one guy in London that bought some of my endler fry just before Christmas and didn't get his fish for 6 weeks. Of course I offered a full refund if he didn't want to wait, but he was more than happy to do so.

Finally, one thing that I do is have a sheet of 21 labels that are set with 20 sets of labels per box, eg., alive inside, fragile, please keep warm, this way up etc, and leave a blank label for inserting the receivers address, then just print each sheet as required.

Finally, as stated before, check with your post office what is the latest that they will accept parcels for next day delivery before 1pm. This can vary, depending where on the collection route they are, and if possible aim to be there no more than 10 mins before the deadline, just to be on the safe side.

Obviously each person that posts fish has their own way of doing things, but as long as the end result is fish that are alive and healthy, surely that is all that matters.

Phew!!, well along with the other suggestions, I hope that you can find the best method for yourself to use.

I've had the small poly boxes arrive with just tape around them, and also in a plastic postage bag.

I just use the post office, next day delivery before 1pm. Never had one not arrive.
