I'm not sure if an L144A even exsists, I've seen it banded around on the net but suspect it could be wrong labeling as the fish are always different! Suspect Question

L144A is a new one to me, and I do try to keep up on what terms are being bandied about. I would guess it refers to an L144 that is also an albino. The only difference between that and a regular albino would be in breeding. An L144A would most likely produce L144 fry when bred back to L144. A regular albino bred to an L144 would produce brown most of the time.
Visually there would be no difference in the fish, both being yellow with red eyes. I would also be cautious of the term L144A, unless a reputable breeder of L144 was using it to describe albino fry from two L144 parents. I find most shop keepers play pretty fast and loose with terms and will use whatever they think will sell a fish for the most money. That being so, most of the time the "L144A" is just another albino.

Im with amber on this, as far as im concerned the L144 is fairly set and I have never heard of an L144A.

in terms of the difference between a normal L144 and an ABN the L144 had black or blue eyes while the ABN had red eyes.

I agree with those above, I think it's just people trying to cash in the popularity of the L144 and making out they are some kind of variation.

Here is another fish described as L144A HERE

Great, thx guys for the clarification.

"A regular albino bred to an L144 would produce brown most of the time."
So, we can breed L144 with regular ABN?

Most L144 being sold today are just a color morph of the common aquarium strain BN, so, yes they can be bred to common BN of any color. I personally don't because we do not yet know enough about the genetics here to know if color crosses like this would increase mis-marks in the L-144 or not. There was at one time a species L144, and there may be a few of them left in Europe, so if you live there you may want to research the L-144 you own to avoid hybridization. If you live anywhere else you are pretty safe in the assumption that the L144 available are color morph common BN.

again, Amber has it Smile

The L144 is very rare here in Aus and I would place money that they are all the colour morph, not the true L144.

This name is one of the big traps for people. A true L144 would be worth a butt load more than the common bristlenose L144 colour morph.

Thx guys, I guess what we hv here in Sg are probably just color morph L144. Not sure if I really want to cross my L144 with ABN, cos I recently bought 3pcs 2", which I suspect I hv 2 female and 1 male.

PostSubject: the blue or black eyed L144 pleco?   L144A and Albino BN EmptySat Nov 20, 2010 2:21 am

my L144 from Gemma at Barnsley is over a year old now and coloured up really nice.
last time I posted pictures a few of you thought he had blue eyes, but as far as I know I think they are black... Smile

Think he needs a female to mate with to make him more happy.

I do have aquarist friends that whenever they see him in the aquarium keep asking if I will sell him.
My clear answer to that is No!.... lol...

He is just to nice to sell, I will try to take some more pictures of him for you as it's been a while since I posted some on here of him.

Some one from a local Aquarist Society mentioned that I should show him and make some cash on him now he is nearly fully mature.

Will let you decide along with me when I try to post some photographs of him later tomorrow.

As ever I hope he is a pure breed and since he is from a reputable source breeder then my hopes are high for him.

Wish Doug was closer as I would gladly pass some of my L144's over to him when they breed again...
Any thing to help a fellow pleco enthusiast out.

Regards

LJ

haha...I thought mine was blue eyed until I look at the pict I took, anyway, can someone tell me if that was a blue-eyed or black-eyed L144 in the pict I posted at '2011 bristlenoseworld calendar'. Even with a real pleco right in front of me, its still impossible for me to identify the color of the eye. Is that a female u see in the pict too? The male I suspected has longer bristle in the front of the snort whilst the female has shorter bristle evenly distributed. Am I right in this way of identification? I hv been trying w/o success to take a pict of the male, he's been hiding. Will attempt to take some pict of him.
