I have a couple of bristlenoses with white tips on their tails and then some without.

Are these a different species?

Young common BN's have a white edge to the tail and dorsal fins that disappears as they get older.

I find it depends more on age than size, though at some point one may prove me wrong....lol..

could this not be set up related also since if you keep Bristlenose in a bigger 4ft or 5ft plus tank they tend to grow and mature
more quickly also.....

just a thought.......

size does affect the growth rate, +1 to Wolverine Smile

The loss of the white tip seems to be a month or two before they fully mature i have found. never seen a breeding fish with the white tip im sorry to say...unless we are talking about some of the other species of Bristlenose who keep their white tips forever

Cheers Doug. I have a couple of females in a tank and 1 has the white tips and 1 doesnt although they are around the same size. I am looking at pairing one of them off so I will go for the non tipped one then

Haha you know I'd been wondering about that myself! All of my young seem to have a white corner on their tales too as you can see in my previous post (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/padders/fishies/IMG_0092.jpg) :P nice to find out why!
