hi guys, ive had my peppers for about a year now one was 12ish cm when i got him and he came with a baby which is now about 6-7cm and she (i think) has 2 little bristles on her nose.... im wanting to breed them but i have a few things going through my mind as im new to breeding b/n's.... ok first thing is im pretty sure she is a she but not 100% can someone please tell me if its normal for a female to have a few bristles? next question is im not sure if its father and daughter but is it possible for them to breed if they were??? the tank i have set them up in is a 2ft tank with a filter and an airstone a medium size drift wood and a b/n breeding cave (the cave wont fit 2 b/n in it tho so im thinking about a ceremic pot cut in half.) ummm some black and red rocks and no heater as ive read and been told they like to breed when its colder... please please give me any info as possible as i really want to give this a shot Smile also im looking out for a few more females as ive also heard a male likes a few Wink
any info would be extremely appreciated.
thanks Alyce Very Happy

HI & welcome...
Yes Pep females can have bristles....with peps sexing is a bit harder.... males can often be late bloomers..I have 3 and I just have to wait n watch em closely....
As for father n daughter, were they bought at the same time from the same shop? are they same size?
Hard to say really...I wouldn't put father over a daughter, I think you can line breed, think you can put a grand dad over a gran daughter , not sure...Doug would be better to answer about genetics for you...

Hey and welcome Smile

there are a few issues that you have raised. Peps are harder to sex as mooo said, and unlike the common bristlenose, females peps more often than not have bristles and they do take a bit longer to become different. the thing is that the females only have bristles on their top lip, if the birsltes begin to run up the snout then its def a male. Best thing to do is to get a piccy for us to look at.

Breeding a father an a daughter is not recommended. It is a 1/8 chance that the offsrping will have the same genes and even though this sounds like a low possability, when you consider that there are thousands of genes, you can see the scale of the issue. I know a lot of people do inbreed them but you do risk low spawn rates and high fry mortality.

You need a heater! while they breed in cooler water than normal you only drop the temp for a few days, and even then its only by a few dregrees, from about 26 degrees to 22 degrees.

You do need to do a bit more research. Breeding bristlenose, especially peppermints, is something that you need to look into. There are lots of threads on here looking at breeding so have a look through them, this one is this one from our faithful leader Smile

Either that or have a look through my ebook, PM me for a link.

peps are harder to breed than the commons so don't be surprised if it takes a while for both yourself and them to get into the swing of things Smile
