PostSubject: Alleviating bloat! I've already lost a BN!   Sun Nov 21, 2010 2:06 pm

Hello all,

I appear to be having problems with bloating among my BN and my pleco! I've already lost one of my BN which had a severe bloat and i can see 2 of my common longfins and pleco with a noticeable bloat atm! I really don't wan to loose anymore fish to bloat especially my pleco because it was a bit expensive Sad

atm i've reduced the amount and frequency at which i feed them. I use to feed them every 2nd day and now i've increased to every 3rd

I read some previous threads on reducing bloat and peas are useful from what i see. I was also told that some fish can 'choke' on the peas. Is this true? I can really benefit from any advice

I've never heard of a fish choking on a pea, but it might be possible if your just using frozen peas.

If you blanch frozen peas for a couple of minutes and then de-shell them. you can crush them slightly if your worried about them swallowing them. it should not be a problem for the Bn's as they rasp their rather than swallowing whole.

Have you read Deanos post about bloat HERE it might help find the possible cause of the bloat.

Thanks for that Jim, but when i put the peas (blanched and deshelled) next to the severely bloated longfin he didn't even go near it to eat! Normally when it comes to feeding he becomes very territorial and aggressive but this time he was allowing the albino longfins eat near his hiding spot. I'm really worried beause i don't want to lose him. My pleco is more of a nocturnal fish but comes out for feeding time, it didn't take too much to the peas though, it had a taste of it and then let the shrimps have the rest lol His behaviour hasn't deviated as much as the longfin but it still has a noticeable bloat Sad How long do i keep feeding them peas and how often until i start a hospital tank and begin medication?

many thanks

Sadly the signs don't look to good for your Bn if it's stopped eating.

The was a post about using garlic on food Here it may just tempt them into eating the peas.

I'd seperate the fish with bloat ASAP as it can be contagious, Deano in his article recommended Octazin if the bloat is in its early stages.

if i don't have an established tank to seperate the bn and pleco to atm what would be the next best thing?

My 2nd tank is still cycling, it hasn't even finished it's ammonia stage yet Sad

i also have shrimps in the tank and pep fry which i'm worried about being affected by the med

Today i lost another one of my ABN so i decided to dissect it.

When i cut it open it's 'digestive' tract from what i could gather, was completely dissolved. Is this normal after they die, or does this clarify my suspicions of an internal parasite?

All my BN which died were bloated as mentioned.

its bloat

The blockage causes the bacteria in the gut to go into a feeding frenzy and they then turn on the gut itself. thats the thing that kills the poor fish Sad
