PostSubject: a clutch of Golden Apple Snail eggs available ....   OMG Apple Snail Eggs!!! EmptyThu Jan 06, 2011 12:58 am

you want to think your self lucky I have 4 clutches in one 60cm tank right now.....

that means I have nearly 600-700 snails to find homes for... lol...

so a local fish store is needed to take a batch off me, or if any one wants to try do grow a clutch out for some equipment you know how to get old of me Smile

I only pass them on usually when they are about 1cm, but have so may I may give some away with fish swaps or sales....

regards

yes apple snails hatch quite regular, and you can expect about a 95% success rate.

that can depend on how moist they have been and also what fish are around to feed off them as they are young.

you may also get them breeding every 8 days at there best so you may want to separate the two adults, that is if you only have adults -
if not you need to isolate the female to a tank of her own, otherwise good luck to your new job as apple snail parent...lol

Lol... yeah you are right... I wondered when you were going to ask that one....

"how long / big is a piece of string then"........ lol

it may be worthwhile checking this out......

http://www.applesnail.net/

I find the easiest way is to watch for the Apple Snail that is laying the eggs - tends to define which one is Female... pmsl.... though I could be wrong.... lol.....

or click on the link above then look on the left of the page that opens up and then click on anatomy, a full description of male and female can
be found there Smile

another brilliant FAQ that covers Apple Snails can be found here....

it is worth mentioning that most snails after eating produce a high ammonia spike in your tank so I would always recommend increases in partial water changes more than usual
when they are breeding, or you could remove the clutches/clusters to another smaller tank and breed them and then feed them to your birds, turtles, curustaceans,
and even snail or meat eating fish too Smile

a cheap source of fish food if you need some thing new for them to try Smile
