PostSubject: can someone please tell me the sex of my pepperment Bristlenose?   Mon Jan 24, 2011 10:32 pm

Hi,
I was wondering if someone would be able to tell me the sex of my peppermint Bristlenese.
I got them about a year ago and i am hoping to breed with them. they are all around 5-6cm long.
I also have 1 orange spot BN that i am not sure of its sex
I am getting them a new home next week. Its a 4x2x2. at the moment they are in my 5 footer that has 3 common bristle nose 5 severams and an Oscar. So they should be much happier!

Thanks heaps!!!

Nice looking fish you have there.

I would say peppermints 1 and 3 are males, 4 is def a female. I am not sure about 2 as the pic makes it hard to say but gun to my head i would go with male.

I reckon the orangespot is a male too.

Often the way, if you got them from a fish shop or breeder, they prob gave you the biggest ones, and males grow faster therefore by chance you get mostly males Sad

However, this is not all bad. If you got your fish from the same place chances are they aree brother and sister...not good for breeding. Look on here and in your local area for people who have peppermints as well and see if you can trade for some different bloodlines. It will pay off in the long run Smile

Whats the best ratio of male/female.
Is it 2 female 1 male?

yeah, most people who breed peppermints go with a Trio. I did it in the past with a pair but if i was to really get into it I would use a trio (1m, 2f)

PostSubject: identifying peppermint catfish....   Tue Jan 25, 2011 1:08 am

have to admit looks like doug is spot on, some peppermint females can have a few more bristles than normal....

you were lucky getting these pictures I have 9 and can never get them to stay still long enough to get any photos Sad

one of my favourite peppermints, I have found that females sometimes take longer to mature than males with my Lo71's too Sad

good luck they all look lovely fish too :P

Not an expert on sexing, especially when your peps are still too small. But I can tell u, with my trio the male has bristles around the nose and up the middle of the head. The females however only have about 3 or 4 on the tip of the nose. My male is about 9.5cm and the females 8-8.5cm
