| Subject: Fin rot or something else? Mon Feb 28, 2011 7:58 pm | |
| Hi, i am a little worried at the moment because a lot of my plecos have got really damaged fins, my big sailfin had two large holes in his tail and one of the bits going through the fin that hold it together (does anyone know what this is called) is broken and flaps about in the hole in his tail, my small common has two big tears in his dorsal fin and tail and my male BN has a small tear in one of his pectoral fins.
One of the holes in the sailfin have healed quite fast but does anyone know what is going on?
what kind of things do you recommend or should i just see if it heals. Following an outbreak of fin rot caused by a white spot outbreak a few months ago i do not think that this is fin rot because the tears and holes are clean and not ragged like fin rot.
Thanks for any help, all appreciated

| Pictures help when trying to diagnose a problem.
If you don't think it's fin rot then the damage could have been caused by fighting, possibly for caves or hiding places. Try watching then at night after the tank lights have been turned off and see if there is any squabbling. If there is you may need to add extra hidey holes for them.
You could treat with melafix or something similar to stop any infection getting into the fins.

| OK, thanks Jim, i don't think it is fin rot at all now, the damage on the fins is healing fast, it could be caused by arguments because there is a lot of competition for food and hiding places, although there is not enough room in the tank to put in extra hiding places withough cutting swimming space so that the fish can move around. the food problem i solved with putting the food in different places to distract them from each other Thanks James | |
