PostSubject: advise on ancistrus ranunculs L34   Fri Mar 04, 2011 6:29 pm

the lfs had two ancisturs labeled ancistrus ranunculus in a 5 gallon tank they are about 4 inches he is very shy, so I purchased one about a week ago and put he or she in a 30gal. tank with several other small plecos and alot of driftwood and plants, wondering if anyone has any advise on caring for these?

I have a longfin abn in the same tank who has done really well and loves eating cucumber or any veggie I put in there for them but I heard these Ranunculus liek a more meaty diet.

I am considering getting the other one but I want to see if this one is ok , he hasn't came out much at all nearly as much as my other plecos but he looks to be eating wood as I have noticed wood shaving looking "ropes" coming from near where he like to hang out.

unfortunatley can't get any pictures since he is so shy.

Ranunculus, except when young, do prefer a more meaty diet compared to most Ancistrus, have you read Curbys profile for Ancistrus Ranunculus (aka Medusa plec) HERE.

Feeding a more meaty(high protein) diet to the Ranunculus could cause problems such as bloat for your L/F Albino.

thanks I did see that before I purchased the fish but I didn't have any other tanks to put him in , I hope he does ok seeing that medusa plecos need to be in a tank with less aggressive eaters. I will be moving some plecos out to my 40 gallon and my new 125 gallon maybe he'll do better with less bottom feeders in the tank, he is one of the larger plecos in there. I have been feeding frozen bloodworms occasionaly and a variety of herbivore pellet and wafer foods. He might be eating more at night just haven't witnessed it yet.

They do tend to be more nocturnal eaters, so feeding after the tank lights have been off for an hour or so will give then a better chance of finding food before other tank mates if your going to keep them in a community.
