Double Spawn Empty
PostSubject: Double Spawn   Double Spawn EmptyMon Aug 22, 2011 4:48 pm

Ok I recently posted here as I was unsure if my BN's were going to spawn or not, WELL my male spawned with my old female with a nice cluster of egges then the next night one of my new females spawned with him giving another nice cluster and now it looks like another of my new females is trying to spawn with him aswell.

So as it currently stands I have my albino male sitting on a cluster of three day old eggs, a cluster of 2 day old eggs and possibly another.

I am very interested to hear if anyone else gets this?

Could this be a risk to my male?

As all my females are brown and my male is albino what am i expected to get?

I think this has been trigured through the introduction of three additional females triguring competition in my tank between the girls?

Any replys will be appriciated.

Thanks

Double Spawn Empty
PostSubject: Re: Double Spawn   Double Spawn EmptyMon Aug 22, 2011 5:33 pm

I've had double spawns but not triple spawns Smile Daddy did just fine even though some of the egg hatched a couple of days later and the wigglers were different size.

Since brown is a dominant color I would personally expect most of them to be brown. In that many eggs you may have a couple of albino.

Now we need pictures Smile

Hi

Going from what I've read and what the results of spawns in my tanks I would say that you will probably get about a 50/50 split between albinos and browns.

However the exact split could vary depending on the ancestry of your fish. ie does the albino male come 2 albino parents or is it a result of a brown and albino mating. If the later then you could have more browns.... same thing goes for the brown females.

I'm sure Doug will be able to explain better and put you right if what I've said is not quite correct.

Just for info from my male which I belive to be a calico and my brown female I get roughly a 60/40 split brown/albino. Guess they must both have some albino in them further back.

Hope this helps rather than confuses...

cheers

Jon

Hmmm that's alot of eggs Shocked Your male should be fine but do give him a rest afterwards. Move him to a separate tank or something. Never herd of 3 spawns in one log, depends on if the male will let the third one in. This is why breeders should only keep a trio at most together otherwise you are overworking your males. They don't know when to stop so that's a breeders responsibility to give em a rest. Congrats on your multiple spawnage tho cheers

what you will get will depend on the genetics of the parents. if the females carry the albino gene then you can expect to see some, if not then they will all be commons.

I have had a few tripples when i have moved females around and forgotten then they have spawned. love it!

Double Spawn Empty
PostSubject: Re: Double Spawn   Double Spawn EmptyWed Aug 24, 2011 1:06 pm

Thought I would give you a quick update on the situation.

Ok so my fist lot of eggs were kicked out yesterday so i got them in a trap and they have all 100% hatched which im very pleased about.

The second lot of eggs are still in the cave with the male due to hatch tonight/tomorrow morning.

I have two females that are gravid which have stopped showing interest in the male for now.

What im thinking of doing is getting another male to take some of the strain off of my albino male. Good idea or not? I thought i would do this whilst my albino is still caving to decrease the chance of them bumbping in to eachother in the tank? i have a cave placed at the other end of the tank ready for a new addition pending your advice.

Some of the babys that have hached have black eyes and some look like they have no eyes at all, does this mean they are albino?

thanks for advice guys its really appriciated

Hi Dan

True albinos are white/yellowish with red eyes, however you will get some that have dark eyes, but these aren't true albino.

cheers

Jon

ps What was the rough split of browns to albinos for this first batch.?

I've had two albinos spawn and not a single brown amongst them. Is this normal?

Double Spawn Empty
PostSubject: Re: Double Spawn   Double Spawn EmptyThu Aug 25, 2011 8:46 pm

Ok heres the figures for spawn number 1

Pure albino male + Brown female (unknown origin possibly albino parent) = 42 babies in total 23 Albino 19 Brown exactly

Spawn number 2 with Pure albino male + Pure brown female i am not sure yet i will do a count tomorrow but there is double the amount of babies so it might be a rough estimate.

Hope this helps with peoples research Very Happy
