Well I got 3 guppies a week or so ago. Yesterday one of the females bodies were completely expanded and it looked abit puffy all over.
I noticed for a couple of days it had not eaten with the other fish and just floated at the top. It died this morning.

The tank they're in is huge and I wanted to put my pepps in there this week. My question is, is it safe? I don't know if the disease it had was contagious or not or if it waits for sick fish and kills them.
I've got really bad luck at looking after anything that isn't a cherry shrimp :| and I'm really damn paranoid about all diseases.

JESUS! That sounds about right. My dad always feeds the fish in that tank these super protein pellets like 70% protein or something. I hope my other fish don't get it T_T

As this happened to a guppy it could be Dropsy and like bloat it is a bacterial infection, dropsy is not usually contagious, unlike bloat, but the cause can sometimes be due to water qualityand as these were new fish the problem could have been caused where you got them from. High nitrite levels can be a cause so if you can test to make sure yours is OK then you can rule it out.

If your other guppies show no signs of it in a couple of weeks then you should be OK to add the Pepps.

How often are you feeding the "Super" protein pellets, the high protein contents will cause problems for BN's so should only be fed a once a week.

Hmmm I also think it could possibly be dropsy. Did the scales on your guppy noticeably stick out, like a pine cone?

I currently have two tanks, one has heaps of cherry red shrimp and 3 peppermint bristlenoses.

The other has guppies and goldfish. I can't really raise the temperature on the tank because the gold fish are cold water. The goldfish and guppies only get the pellets, the shrimp and bns only get zucchini everyday and sometimes algae wafers.

I wouldn't say the guppy had pineconed scales but it did look a lot puffier as well as expanded.
It's gills also looked abit red but the fish was kind of see through to begin with so I don't know if the reddish gills are new or if I just noticed it because it looked sick.

I think the tank is about 300L so I doubt it would've been high nitrite levels because there were only 3 guppies and 4 relatively small goldfish before the other guppy died. I also do a 25% water change every week.

All the other fish look fine.
would I find octozin in australia just in case?
