fry bloating

hi i was wondering if i could get some help, my fry are looking bloated and i have found a few dead today when doing a clean. how can i stop this?

Chances are you're feeding them too much/not the right type of food.

Fry should only consume vegetables or algae, so don't feed them brine shrimps, blood worms or the likes (if you're doing that). That's really the most common reason for bloats. Otherwise, if you are just feeding them veggies/algae, lower the amount (feed bits at a time and monitor them carefully, removing any excess food if they seem to bloat again).

You need to boil some peas and peel the outer skin off and feed them to the fry,this hopefully will help get rid of the bloat,and follow what azedenkae said,just feed them on cucumber and a good algae wafer and things along those lines.I feed my fry and my adults on peas once or twice a week as they like them and are good for them.

Just one more thing I thought of.Are you doing regular water changes and removing uneaten food?

Doing 10% daily water changes will help keep them healthy and improve growth rates.

I'm not a big fan of daily waterchanges. I try to do a 20-25% waterchange every other day (miss a day or 2 if I'm busy) My routine is Tues, Thurs and Sunday. Seems to work fine for me. Even my bn in my discus tank whose diet consist of mainly protein based food are growing fine with no health issues. They do get algae wafers but I can't stop them from eating the discus leftovers.

thanks for the advice, i have stopped the food now for a bit as there is enough algae on the glass for them to graze on. i have been feeding them spuella ( is that how its spelt) algae wafers broken up to little bits . i have unfortunately lost a few more today.... i an doing 25% water changes every 2 days . most of the fry look like they are doing great !

i will keep you updated on the progress. also in interested in how the peas go in the tank. wouldnt that muck up the water or even clog your filter?

nope peas are great for this! they dont foul the water or filters or anything. in fact for that issue they are better than most other veges as they last longer. just a pain to prep them

What is the prep for peas?
I usually peel them, make a "necklace" small pebble one one end and hang it into the tank.
Is there any more simple way?

step 1: throw handful of frozen peas into pot of boiling water for 2 mins

step 2: remove outer shell of pea and discard

step 3: throw peas into tank and watch them get swarmed by bristlenose

Peas are great and very good for them,especialy helpful with bloat,give them a try.Also try them on a bit of cucumber but remove it after 24 hours

You mean cuc stuffed with peas?

By the way, I leave veggies in from dusk to dawn. Max. 12 hours.

What i do with cucumber is chop a piece off about 2 inches,core it so that all the seeds are out,so that you have a cucumber tunnel in effect.I leave the skin on as i have found that they like it.Then it is usualy fine to leave in from tea time to tea time the following day.Obviously if it looks like it needs removing then do so but with the method i use it has always been fine.The babies can eat away at the softer middle and ends and the ones that like the skin and can tackle it,eat the skin.It is the seed part that is full of water and breaks up easily and is really best removed.Try it

With mine;

Cucumber I just cut a two inch piece slice it in two length ways, wieght it and put it in. The seed bit I leave in as this is the bit they all go for first.

Frozen Peas, I just put a couple in my mouth to warm them up this will soften the skin which I then peeled off and then then just drop the peas in the tank, I don't bother boiling or blanching them.

The only thing I do blanch is butternut squash, but thats only because once it has been blanched you don't have to weight it, after blanching it will sink on its own.

hHaving said that I do sometimes give them a Savoy cabbage leaf if there are any leftover after dishing the dinner out... they do seem to like that.

I also tend to leave the veg in there for anything up to 48 hours, I take it out when it looks like its going a bit mushy. However there isn't normally much left.

sorry to inform you guys that i lost the lot today... i cant see where i went wrong as the water was clean and my levels were good. i put the peas in there too but looks like im back to square one... i appreciate the tips and think this is a top forum.

what im trying now is i have put two of my convict fry into the "death tank" to see if its in the water. so far so good.

Have you tested the water?

I tested the water and all seemed good

If all the water tests were OK, then it was probably diet related. What were you feeding before you started to lose them

Were the fish with the male or parents or had they been removed

the fry were on their own and i was feeding cucumber, zucchini, algae discs .

can it affect them not having the dad with them?

Alright, so being with this topic from the start... firstly, sorry to hear that. :/ Death of an entire batch is very sad. :/

Secondly it does seem a tad of a mystery. Firstly, if the fries all died off, then it's not something that's happening to them individually, but rather, something in the environment. The water is okay, so there must be no stress from there. Fry do fine without their father - at least, they won't all die off like this. It probably does not have anything to do with any sort of competition or bullying - since that'd usually show the reversed signs, y'know, starving and all that. You're not feeding them anything 'bad', algae wafers should be fine. The water changes too... well, that *might* be a bit too much, if the fry are from a weak line, but usually is not the cause - plus, it's bloating.

That leaves either overfeeding, or some sort of disease - there's not really any other explanation.
