PostSubject: Going from a 60L to 240L   Going from a 60L to 240L EmptyMon Nov 28, 2011 8:05 pm

Hello again everyone,

I'm very excited, I'm off to collect my new tank tomorrow, hoorah! I just have a question. In the tank I have got now, the 60L, there are two filters an Eheim Bio power 160, I'm not sure what the other one is as it came with the tank (Arcadia Arc). I also have an Eheim 2217 ready for the new tank, still in box, and when I have got a bit more money I will get another filter too. Anyway, my question is, can I move all the fish from the old tank to the new tank straight away and top up with new water using the old water and old filters? Oh I also have a small 35L quarantine tank too with a filter so could use that too? There are no fish in the quarantine tank and in the 60L I have 2 dwarf Gourami, 3 BN's and 5 Yoyo loaches which I want to eventually split up from my BN's and put back into the 60L if you see what I mean, hope that makes sense. scratch

I think it would be better to add the water, fish and filters from your old tank plus your new one and then add about another 15-20L of new water ensuring there is enough to cover the filters. Also squeeze some of the old filter pads onto the new pads which will help seed them. Add say another 10L a day untill you reach the maximum level. I think that if you filled the tank up straight away it would be like doing a massive water change and could stress the fish or even send the tank into a cycle.

well i rekon...which dosent count for that much...lol

i would personally and the 2 filters in, also add in the 2217 but seed it first....depend on sizes of other sponges you can take one from each or just give them a squeeze....ultimatly you only have 10 fish.......

after a while you should be able to take on of the filters back across to your 60l...

just my thoughts......

Thank you very much for your replies. I've got my tank, yipee! and have spent most of the day sorting out the lights, filters, cleaning substrate etc trying to fit it around schools run and stuff and haven't had time to swap everything over so something to look forward to tomorrow. I'll touch base again when all done, hopefully with photo's :o

what i would be doing is setting up the 2217 on the old tank to start it building up its bacteria and move one of the other filters to the new tank just to start it off. I would take 40% of the water from the old tank and put it in the new tank with a bit of fresh water. then every day i would take some from the exsisting tank and put it into the new tank. build up the level of water in the new tank using a combo of old and new water and keep a close eye on the ammonia and nitrite levels as these will let you know if the tank is going to head into a cycle. if you dont see any ammonia then i would move one or two fish over and keep up the process until the water in the new tank it totally stable. with only two fish you shouldn't have an issue with having it underfiltered. then shift the 2217 and other filter across. should work well.

congrads on the new tank, how much fun are new tanks!!

Hello again everyone. I was going to do what was suggested by jim.and davew and kfenk and then I heard from Doug so I thought I may have a go at that but because the new tank is quite long there is not enough water to cover any of my filters, so what I have done so far is to just run the 2217 on the old tank, with topped up water, together with the other filters to keep bacteria alive (turned them down so that the fish don't get splatted on the side of the glass) and just left the water that I transferred in the new tank. I feel like I'm in a bit of a muddle with it at the moment, not sure what to do. Should I go back to original plan advise by jim.and, davew and kfenk? Sorry about this everyone. Embarassed

Flipping heck my nitrite levels have rocketed!!!!! Argh! I don't think I have time to do anything else other than a water change. Just to recap, I have put all the water from the two existing tanks I had 35 & 60 litres, these had been properly cycled with no ammonia or nitrite in either and a little nitrate in the 35l. I then added one container, about 25litres of RO water so that the filters would be covered. I put the 3 filters from the old tanks into the new tank with the new 2217 which I squeezed the old sponges into, that was yesterday. Today I put in 10 litres of treated tap water and tested, I nearly fell on the floor when I saw nitrite reading just now, so just about to do a water change. This is worrying!!!! pale

Or maybe I should add more water to dilute it?
I can't believe I didn't test before adding the 10litres!

the issue here is that the tank has not cycled. in a cycled tank there is a layer of good bacteria on everything, the glass, the gravel, the rocks...everything. this all contributes to the biological filtering and this needs to be built up. hence why i was suggesting the slow transistion between the two tanks

The slow transistion, as you said, is what I had planned but I didn't have enough old water to cover filters in new tank even when I added 25 litres of new water because it's quite a long tank. I see what you mean about the good bacteria. Embarassed
