yeah, moon lights are the way to go. Not sure if the fish can see them but they are generally so weak that it doesnt bother them. Best best is some blue LEDs or blue cold cathode. both cheaply avaliable online

My solution is a bit simpler: I do not pull the drapes, so the moon find its way to my tanks.
Amazing experience to watch them at full moon.

Sadly i live in very built up area if i open the blinds at night i will be lucky if i get an orange glow from the street lights outside.

Go to an auto parts store or auto section of a department store and take a look at the LEDs for auto interiors or undercarriage. The undercarriage lights should be waterproof. I bought a set of blue lights for the undercarriage for $15 US. I attached them to a 3/4" square stick and laid it across my aquarium supports. It has just enough light that I can see what's going on at night.

I found some marine versions on the internet but after shipping costs were going to be three to four times as much.
