I have read that you should not breed l144 brothers and sisters, and also that you can. What is your opinion on this. Also can you breed juviniles with their parents?

Basically there are 4 reasons people interbreed they're plecs. 1 is for gene purposes eg. say your L144s had a blue fry, you would breed it back with the parents to further develop the strain. 2nd reason is lack of fish to pick from. Sometimes there is no other acessable fish to choose from so they just interbreed them. 3rd is well mistakes happen and sometimes for unexpecting hobbyists theyre bn breed. Lastly that I can think of is well people just being lazy. They just breed for money so purchasing siblings and growing them for breeding is a cheap alternative.
These are the only reasons I can think of at the moment so if anyone else has something to add feel free.

As kfenk has said inbreeding is often done to develop strains for a desirable trait but it can just as easily develop an undesirable trait. This does not mean that inbred fish will all be deformed or have other problems but the risk can increase. I think inbreeding usually has a greater effect on the immune system and eventually weakens the bodies defences to illnesses.

When inbreeding is done it's usually done on a very selective basis by knowledgeable breeders.

Unless you are breeding for a particular triat and know your crossing techniques (yes, there are techniques and protocols to follow when doing this including timing of intorducing fresh bloodlines etc) then do not do it.

Bristlenose and other plecos suffer from inbreeding too much already because of lazy and irrisponsible owners. Please do not add to the problem.

Doug, you are reading my mind, or L144 interbreeding 3621428690 ?

I was just thinking during my weekly WC that when should I bring in fresh blood? My L144 pair just had their 8th batch, and I wonder whether I should introduce another M or F.

Could you please let me know where I could find some readings on this subject?

Not to put too fine a point on it but Germany Very Happy

When it comes to crossing and developing traits they are the absolute kings in the relm. I read are article translated from Das Aquarium a few years back thatr was really helpful. From memory it was every three generations you need to bring in fresh blood until the trait is locked in, the outcross 3-4 times maintaining the trait. generally you have several breeding pairs all going for the same trait so crossing within them increases retainment rate of desired genes.

More than that I dont know but i would start in germany.

So, if my understanding is correct, when F3 is mature, I should introduce fresh blood.
That sounds more rational to me, then "mixing" after every third batch.

I will try to dig-up Das Aquarium, but in case you find your copy, please kindly share that with me.
