Tank temp for spawning Empty
PostSubject: Tank temp for spawning   Tank temp for spawning EmptyTue Nov 08, 2011 8:41 am

Well my run has come to an end. My bristlenose were breeding like machines and every time a male was introduced to the main tank he was on eggs within a day or two. Now, it's been a month and no more spawning. The male isn't even claiming a cave at the moment...
I put this down to temp. Here in Northern Australia the warmer months have kicked in and my tank water is up around 30 degrees (90 fahrenheit) and I think this is what has put a stop to things.
I'm wondering if it's worth trying to lower the tank temp to induce spawning again... I've tried regualar water changes for two weeks, but no go there. Maybe use ice? Or should I just let nature take its course and wait for cool weather again?

Hi,If it was me I would just wait for the weather to cool down. This will give them all a real good rest too.It is hard to get the temp down enough when it is that high and by trying to do so may be detrimental to the fish (if the temp is fluctuating up and down too much). 30 is pretty high though, how big is the tank? If you need to get the temp down,if it is possible remove the lid of the tank or at least keep it open if that is possible to let some heat out.Maybe keep the lights off for longer aswell. If you have got a fan,set that up to blow cold air onto the tank.Keep a close eye on the temp as you need to try to lower it a little but to keep it constant so it isn't fluctuating all over the place.Just a few suggestions to try but if the fish seem o.k it may be best to leave well alone as long as the temp doesn't go any higher.Keep a close eye on it.

Mhm, it is getting hot here in Australia, isn't it. Brissie's still in the 20s, but the north... @_@

Anyways, I reckon if you can keep a constant lower temperature, that would be good - inducing them to breed through other methods when the temperature is not right can be detrimental, as s0078077 mentioned, as they'd be under too much stress. Do you have an AC? If you really want them to breed that much, you can sacrifice your electric bill a bit and turn on the AC... practically all day, that'll do the trick (assuming you keep your fish indoors and all). Otherwise, giving them a break is not a bad idea.

How long have you kept them for? More than a year? What happened last summer?

Air pressure is also a factor in BN's breeding, in nature the rainy season means lower air pressure, at the moment with your high temps you will also have higher air pressure.

You may find if you get a storm and the pressure drops your BN's will spawn.

yeah, the breeding slows down over the warmer months. I really make frends with the weather man an wait for those fronts to come through. the temp in the tank is not really too much of an issue. as long as its not getting too hot. I always make sure that I have some way of cooling the tank down. I have been mucking around with a new cooling idea which seems to be working well. I'll post details in a bit, just a teaser for you.

Thanks folks. I've had them for over two years now, but this is the first year in the new house, which is warmer (lower roof). I think they'll be ok but yes, maybe dropping the lights during the middle of the day would be a good idea just to keep it safe. THat's good info on the storms, I guess i'll cross my fingers and wait for a front! THe bloke at the pet store recommended using colder water with my water changes (i.e. melting some ice in it). What do you think?

Cheers, Lee

yeah, a lot of people do that (me included sometimes). I always have some bottles in the freezer for the summer months to keep the tanks in check.

Good news to report. Started turning the light off in the middle of the day for a few hours and two days later I now have a double spawn. My common and albino females both layed with the big male albino!

Success. cheers

Turns out that was the last batch for the season. I got a new 4ft tank around Christmas and as yet there has been no further broods. Male is holding in the breeding log during the day and wandering at night. It is pretty warm up here in North Queensland though, so I think the temp might be too high. Anyone else in Northern Australia having more luck?

Seems i'm back in business. My albino male and common female decided today (while it was raining) to get on the bad fin and do the good thing... all day. She's been in and out all day and there are plenty of eggs in there, so I'm pretty chuffed.
