PostSubject: Aquaclay Substrate   Aquaclay Substrate EmptyWed Jul 18, 2012 4:51 pm

I have Aquaclay (like JBL Manado) as a substrate in my main tank but I was thinking that it might be a little rough for my Bristlenose or Corys.
Has anybody had any experience with this stuff ???
Should I rip my tank apart and change the substrate ???
Any help would be terrific.

Thank you;
Do you think it will turn into a major problem for my Corys ?????
At the moment they seem fine but long term ???
The substrate can also be seen on my profile picture behind my bristlenose.

Hi;
I was afraid of that, now I have one of two choices.
Get rid of the substrate or get rid of the Corys. Aquaclay Substrate 484291715

i have 3 breeding groups of cory cats and i either use a bare btm tank or i use pool filter sand . i found out the hard way it hard on their bristles , they will live and spawn on gravel but they will wear the bristle down really short.

I would like to use sand, but I am worried about plants.
I hate to have a barren tank with only driftwood and stones.

i used to have my fully planted tank with pool filter sand. I used to have a clay/sand mix layer on the bottom, then a good layer of sand over the top. I used to have insane plant growth. I was throwing lotus away like a weed cos i had totally saturated the adelaide market haha

A mix does sound like a good idea.
Now for the hard part, trying to find pool sand in Germany. Not as easy as in Oz.
But I hear that sandbox play sand is supposed to be pretty good as well.
Ever had anybody using it ??

I have now moved my corys to another tank with a sand bottom and the plecos stay in the big tank with the Aquaclay.
I hope that is ok. Suspect

I hope so as well, that seems like the best solution all around. I really did not want to drag 30 kilos of Aquaclay out of my tank to replace it with sand. Far to much distruption. A new tank seemed so much smarter.

Here is the first of my pictures;
It is from my 180 litre tank and in it are the offspring of my boisterous swordtails (a type that I have breed with a wild orange green female and a wild male green swordtail). I like to call them sunset swordtails because of the orange around their dorsal fin.
You can also see one of my Albino corys (Corydoras aeneus) before I moved him to the other tank.
This also shows the Aquaclay pretty well.
In that tank is also my Bristlenose and my Flash pleco. Pictures I will post shortly, just when they are out from hiding and in a good enough position to take the picture.
