Is this wood suitable?

alright. i went down to the LFS and i got me a piece of wood from the reptile section since i cant find any wood any where else local. its a piece of cherry wood or a cherry tree branch. so i put it in my empty tank so it can soak and water log. well i looked at it today and its got some white/clear lookin stuff on it. looks like kinda like a booger in water.

should i not use this piece ?
or
what should i do with it before my trio gets here on friday?

Hi,most of the wood sold for for reptiles aren't mean for water so it will probably just rot away or cause problems.I personaly would only use wood meant for water.

I know this is an older post but I would like to expand this a little with a few reasons NOT to use Cherry wood-EVER

Cherry, Black Cherry etc... members of the family Prunus spp. all contain levels of Cyanogenic Glycosides (cyanide) compounds which can be highly toxic. The highest concentration of these natural chemical poison levels are present in the leaves then followed closely by the sap which is within the cambium layer which is just underneath the outer (bark) covering. Even if the outer bark is stripped, bleached, baked & scoured of all traces of the sap, there will always be trace amounts of the cyanide compound present in the wood which WILL lead to problems with the rasping action of the Plecs when fresh wood is exposed & trace amounts build up in the fish/aquaria.

*Cherry (Prunus spp.) is just one of MANY woods to never use in an aquaria mainly due to the woods naturally occuring chemical/defensive properties.
**Always know exactly what type of wood you'd like to add to the aquaria & research it heavily to make sure (to the best of your abilities) that it will be safe.

I guess sticking with the common stuff like mangrove root and bogwood is always the best.
