External parasites and the BN Empty
PostSubject: External parasites and the BN   External parasites and the BN EmptySat Dec 08, 2012 3:54 am

I have a 20g with 3 platys and a BN. Recently I bought some live plants from Petco. They came with snails and within 3 days I had 2 dead female platys with what looked like a white worm hanging out of the gills. The remaining 3 platys have been glancing since then. Research says snails can carry flukes. I'm treating with API General Cure. Do BNs get external parasites? I haven't seen the BN glancing like the Platys. Anyone ever hear of something like this?

Hi,these could be anchor worms,if you can see them with the naked eye and yes bristlenoses can get them aswell.A treatment called JBL Gyrodol has been recommended before on here, although i have never used it myself. This treats both types of worm and also tape worm.Maybe worth looking into or have a look for some other good anchor worm/fluke worm treatment.

I went to Tractor Supply Store here in Hutchinson, KS, USA and picked up some fenbendazole dog dewormer. It completely wiped out planaria in my 10g shrimp/bristlenose tank in my classroom.

Use of Dewormer (Fenbendazole)
By Richard Lien, Neonshrimp (http://www.arizonainverts.com/articles/UseofDewormer(Fenbendazole).html)

I tied a piece of cottonwood to a brick and hung it from my dock in May. In August I took the water logged wood out, bleached and high pressure washed it, then wire brushed it rinse it and soaked it for a couple of days. I put it in my 90g tank. It stayed on the bottom perfectly. My plecos enjoyed it immensely and have almost cut it in half with their rasping. The first week my various tetra species spent hours picking tiny red worms that crawled out of the wood. I am guessing they bored into the wood deeper than the bleach soaked in. I should have probably baked it to raise the interior temperature high enough to kill any organism. But, I haven't any problems with parasites in this tank so I am guessing the fish cleaned them out or they weren't parasites.

BTW, my java fern sticks to the cottonwood much better than my chunk of osage orange (hedgeapple) and mulberry that are in the same tank. My plecos won't even rasp on those two hard woods.
