I know that high amounts of protein causes bloat, but does it matter what kind of protein?

vegetable protein versus animal(salmon/shrimp) protein.

Can i give bn pleco larger amounts of vegetable protein?

for example, bn pleco eats algae, spirulina is algae but some spirulina flakes contains 38-40% proteins, but was made for plecos, i heard that the protein content shouldn't exceed 28%

so what is correct?

spirulina is an algae sure, but consider how it is fed to the fish, its concentrated. spirulina flake is designed as a high protein food for fish that need some roughage in their diet, not for algae eaters.

stick to high volume, low protein foods.

I have to agree with Doug's response.

A very good question though, as there is so much misleading and contradictory information available.

AngelsPlus sells both an algae wafer and a Premium Spirulina flake at good prices ($5.95 for 8oz wafers/$9.75 for a lb.). Both contain only 28% protein.
Very important in my mind, "fish meal" is quite far down on the ingredient list in both foods. I use and like both products very much, as do the fish. You may want to check them out.

Most brands of "algae" wafers and "herbivore" or "spirulina" flakes for some reason ($$$ ya think?) still usually have fish meal as their first (meaning main) ingredient.
