sounds like your getting the BN bug mate lol...

Livebearer's are a bit of a miss for me not as much the large one's but the baby's they have as i had a breeding pair of swordtail's and i gave my dad 5 of the baby's, they completley pecked down all the male's bristle's the little gits lol....platty's may be different but they will breed like wild fire mate...

And 3-5 sounds like a good start........

As for tank setup well...ive found the darker and more life like the better...so go for maybe a dark gravel with plenty of bog wood and cave's.......

I've found that the parents are fine with the babies. i have a 2 foot tank with about 70 babies in there and the parents still do their thing. Just be careful about what kind of filter you get as if its a strong canister filter it can suck the babies in it. Smile

good luck with your project. ive found with the canister filter intake i put on a large sponge filter or a filter sock (like a stocking) stops the babies getting sucked up.Just make sure you check it frequently to stop it clogging.

I have had a stingray filter in a livebearer tank - it ate up all my sailfin molly fry that were a good 1/2" long. I now have externals with foam over intakes in baby tanks or the good old air driven foam filters,Y
