dark areas on albino bn Empty
PostSubject: dark areas on albino bn   dark areas on albino bn EmptySat May 11, 2013 12:48 am

Tank size and setup: 200 l, 100 cm x 46 cm x 47 cm

Substrate: gravel

filtration (Internal, external, flow rate, last cleaned and what it was cleaned in): Two internals, ehiem pick up 2012 and a 400 lph Otto.

Airstone/sponge filter etc: airstone but not used at moment

Inhabitance: Tetras, single danio, single swordtail, barbs and guppies. Another bn common male.

Fish affected by issue (all/bottom dwellers, all bristlenose or a single fish etc): Only albino female.

Feeding system (what, how much, how often): Fish fed flake or frozen 1 x per day. Bn given one of a selection of zuchinni, cucumber, squash, sweet potato once a day.

current water change system (before illness appeared): 1 x per week, 20% approx, one filter cleaned per week (clogs as have fine leaved plants which shed a lot!)

water changes made since illness appeared: none yet.

As many levels as you know (pH, Ammonia, nitrate, nitirite, KH, GH, TDS, aanything you can find out, your local fish shop should be able to help with this): nitrate 20 mg/L, nitrite 0 mg/L, pH 7 - 7.5. kH between 40 - 80, gH 60 mg/L. Approx values, don't trust the test set much. Doesn't do ammonia.

any chemicals used (including carbon/chemical fitration inside the filter): aqua one leaf food for plants, prime to neutralise chlorine, stress zyme for good bacteria. All used once a week

water source and treatment: tap, prime and stress zyme

Major changes in the last 3 weeks (new fish, new plants, new anything or changes): Just added albino female a week ago. Few guppy fry born.

Symptoms (gasping, not moving, bloated, spots, wounds, stressed colours etc): Darker patches on albino bn side. Eating and moving normally.

Hi,

I've filled in the above as well as I can, I have had a female albino bn for a week and she has developed darker patches on her sides during this week. Other than this she appears well, spends a lot of time on the food in the tank and moves around normally. Haven't seen the male be aggressive towards her, they do get close sometimes (not touching) but he does spend quite a bit of time in his cave.

Hope the picture link works, if not will try again, its in photobucket.

Thanks,

Suks

Thanks! Yes for the past two days has had cucumber and zuchini, has had pumpkin the past week and on squash today.

The breeder I got her from said that some of the albinos go back to wild type colouring sometimes in patches, was also wondering if it could be that?

My 2 girls are like this when gravid & about to mate.
If you are worried about blockages/slow moving food, add some shelled, softened peas Wink

Thanks, she has some dark areas underneath too, but just thought they were internal organs as they are on both sides and regular shapes.
Be exciting if she is gravid, just glad she's not sick though!

Will be on peas tomorrow, although has to be said that like algae wafers, the bn have a lot of competition for them!

Thanks!

Tried them on peas today but neither bn is interested, she has tried it and moved on. The tetras, guppies and barbs loved them though and look rather full now!

when introducing them to new food, give them a starvation day where you do not feed them for at least 24hrs & add the new food in after that Wink they will be so hungry they will eat what ever they are given Wink

Have to say they aren't fussy eaters, she sits and waits for it every morning on the gravel, he is more restrained now the female is around but both willingly try and seem to sit for quite a while and return to, everything have tried them on so far. Esp the girl, have to be careful dropping food in as she knows where it will go now and sits there waiting!
