The Mysterious egg Empty
PostSubject: The Mysterious egg   The Mysterious egg EmptySun Oct 12, 2014 11:52 am

Hi all, I wanted to tell you about a strange thing that happened yesterday.

Background info: I have a 65 gallon planted tank that has 2 angelfish and 2 bushynose plecos. The plecos are one very large male that I think to be an L180, and a smaller pleco L213. These 2 plecos resemble each other and it's possible the male could be a 213 but I'm just not sure. There is a cave in the tank but not for breeding, just for the larger pleco to have a home. I haven't even confirmed the smaller pleco is male or female since I really hadn't intended to breed these.

Anyway, Yesterday I spent the day at the Colorado aquarium society fall auction which was fun. I bought a couple plants among other things. When I got home I put the plants into the tank and decided to remove the cave since it was where I wanted to put plants. The male was not in the cave and I remember carefully lifting it up and looking inside, then pouring the water out. It didn't have anything in it. Then about an hour later my wife starts saying "what's that egg looking thing"? So I go look and sure enough it looks like one single pleco egg ! I have no idea where it came from. I immediately go check the cave I removed and no eggs in there. So next I get a flashlight and start inspecting every area of the tank and I see no more eggs and the 2 plecos are acting as they always do.

This is the mystery. Did my plecos breed and eat all but one egg? Are the rest of the eggs hidden and I don't see them? OR... Did I get an egg along with the plants I bought?

I have placed the egg into an egg tumbler but I have no idea what it will be - if it even hatches....???

Yep, I'm reasonably sure it was not my small pleco's egg. Pretty sure it's also a male but also think it's way too small to be of breeding size.

Odd...

If there is one there will be more, they will never lay a single egg.

I'd be having a good look for the others. unless the male has eaten them due to the disturbance...

Yes this is odd... In any case, it looks like the egg was not viable so I will never know what it was. I searched the tank for any other eggs and saw none. But I do think the smaller pleco is a male so the egg must have come from bags of plants I bought at auction. The larger pleco that I think is a L180 is definitely a male.
