PostSubject: Possible poorly bristlenose??   Possible poorly bristlenose?? EmptyFri Feb 05, 2010 11:32 pm

Hi There

I wonder if someone can help us. We have a male Bristlenose (Munch) who seems to have some white gunk on the sides of his mouth/gills - i say gills, its the parts which they puff out in defence. Forgive my ignorance but i dont know the proper name for them!. It looks a bit fluffy but not like a fungus. We have a female too (Nibble) and we think she is full of eggs. He was guarding one of the rocks we have in the tank and we thought that they might be getting ready to spawn as he was showing all the normal behaviour i.e setting up camp in a rock. defending it from the other fish that swam past.... However he seems to have lost all interest in guarding his cave/rock (and in Nibble!) and we now see that he has this gunk on his mouth. However two days ago we found what looked like 'white algae' on one wall of the aquarium. i am now thinking that this was from his mouth. That being said, when we saw him yesterday and ealier today he showed no signs of this white gunk.

Could it be:

A) He's eaten some eggs (if there are any - we cant see) that have failed and the white gunk is the remnants
B) He's bashed/grazed the sides of his mouth/gills on the rocky cave while he was getting it ready for Nibble?
C) He's poorly.

He seems to be eating/pooping ok and isnt showing any other signs

Nibble is eating and pooping normally and is showing no signs of illness either
We did a water change to day but our tank readings were Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 10. Its a 125L tank.

They share a tank with peppered corys, clown loaches, neons, harlequins, emerald eye tetras and diamond tetras. None of these fish are showing any signs of disease
If anyone can shed any light on this we would be most grateful. Please let us know if you need any more info!

thanks

Very Happy
