Help Please, First Lot of Eggs Empty
PostSubject: Help Please, First Lot of Eggs   Help Please, First Lot of Eggs EmptyWed Feb 24, 2010 12:40 pm

Well just got my first lot of bristlenose eggs ever. Only bought the pair a few weeks back so starting to think i've got a bargain. £15 for a huge female around 18 months old, together with a much smaller male, both Brown Longfins. They've been displaying some funny behaviour the last couple of days and this morning after during a water change they finally done the deed. Don't know whats going on at the moment as the female seems to be trying to get back in the cave and the eggs are being kicked out. The eggs were on the bottom of the cave. Is this normal as from pictures i've seen they usually stick the eggs to the top of the cave. Starting to get a bit worried as i've got seven Angelfish in the tank. Unbelievably they don't seem to have noticed the stray eggs yet but i'm worried they will eat them. The tank is a Rio 300 so plenty of room, just wondered if i'd be better moving the eggs to a smaller tank. Appricate any help, Mark.

if the female as tryd getting back in the cave she probably asnt finished spawning and if its their first time these things happen the male some times gets a bit over protective of the eggs and scuffels with the female instead of letting her back in the cave so dont worry about it they wiil get it right ive had this a few times with a new pair you could try removing the eggs and hatch them in a fry trap with a air stone or with a sponge filter like this theirs every chance their fertile

Cheers Deano. Just sucked up around 20 eggs off the bottom of the tank and put them in a trap so we'll see what happens. Can't see any eggs in the cave now but the female is still trying to get back in. Right old boxing match going on. Thanks for your help, Mark.

Sound advice deano.
B/N will lay eggs any how they like - upside down ,on the cave floor even behind filter heads so I wouldn't
be to concerned about that one. You could try tilting the cave opening up (about a 20-30 degree angle) this could help
with saving eggs being kicked out the cave.
Watch out for the Angels, mine staring out as 10cent piece size fish and easy going unsuspecting fish- 6 months on they've grown considerably and were the culprits in devastating my last batch of babies in no time.
cheers J
