moving BN fry (still with egg sac)?

So i've got a breeding pair of common BNs in a 29gal. The only other fish in there are fry from my jewel and green terror cichlids that i'm growing out (0.5-1"). The filter is the cascade 700 canister (pretty over kill). They just bred for the second time and the eggs hatched two days ago. There were a few babies after the first breed, but they all dissappeared. I'm not sure weather to blame the cichlids or the strong filter, but i want to move these new babies to a 10 gal before the same thing happens again. They still have their eggs sacs, but are they ok to move into another tank? will they be ok without their father? Will they be ok with a 1" BN in the same tank?

Well they would be better off in a fry saver or egg tumbler in the same tank but if moving them to a separate tank is the only option then I guess so. As long as the filters are fully cycled and you fill the tank with water from the other tank they will hopefully be ok. With wrigglers it's always best to leave em with the dad but it doesn't always work out that way I guess. Good luck with them, fingers crossed they survive

Hi,you say they still have their egg sack so are they still in their cave with dad? If so,the best thing to do would be to transfer the whole cave with babies and dad to the new tank.The way to do it would be to put a container large enough to hold the cave and enough water to cover it well into the the tank where the cave is.Then put the whole cave into the container with babies and dad and then transfer the container to the new tank.Do this very very carefully so as not to disturb them.As kfenk said make sure it is a fully cycled filter and water from the main tank.If this is not a possibility then a fry saver would probably be the best bet.Good luck and keep us updated please

I would do that, but they used a big peice of driftwood instead of the pot lid that i put in for them. The only tanks that i have open are 10 gals and are too small to fit the piece of wood. I tried a pleco trap last night, but the cichlids kept getting caught in it. I'm gonna retry this afternoon with a bigger hole?t

hmmm a bit of a predicament then really.I don't think a trap is going to help with catching fry at all.You are going to have to be very carefull with them.Maybe put a fry saver in and try and get most of them into it as they are probably huggled together if they have their egg sacks still.Maybe get someone to very very slowly lift and tilt the wood while you try to collect them?
