PostSubject: Three little Babies!!!   Three little Babies!!! EmptyMon Jan 02, 2012 9:55 pm

Hope this post works, these are the babies-3 in total- "Branches"- the dad passed away before they hatched, so I used a fry saver thanks BNWorld otherwise I wouldn't have known what to do to help the eggs, they are now with their mum and 2 ottos. Not sure yet when it would be safe to move them to a larger tank, but I think pretty soon, just was worried about them getting sucked up in the filter.

Just wanted to show their size compared to the ottos! Just incredible how fast they grow, these are from the 31st and now they are quite a bit bigger!
The rest of the pics are in the gallery, didn't want to take up too much room! Enjoy I am loving them very much. And another big thank you to BNWorld for all the info and great advice from everyone!!

Hi Carolan,

Nice little fellas you have.
Sorry about the loss, but hopefully they will make it without dad.

Just for your information, from time to time, I take away the eggs on the 4th day after spawn.
I place them in a 5 litre tank with good ventillation (spongefilter) and a drop of anti fungus.
(In Hungary the thing is called Xantacridin, but in other parts of the world I believe that is Iodophor. Since I am not sure, please kindly check with fellow BN owners.)

I raise the little ones till they are 1 month old, than I move them to the growing tank.

I had absolutely no problem, and the mortality rate was 0 (yep, zero).
In the future, if you wish to raise as much as possible, I recommend to give my way a chance.
If you do so, I would be glad to hear about your experiences.

Wish you good luck,
Mary

Thank you.. I will try that next time, I worried about the fact they didn't have dads poop with all the good bacteria and stuff, so I put mum in with them, just recently, hopefully she'll be able to provide them with the needed bacteria colony for their tummies, also I am lucky because my ottos are so docile I originally put them in with the three because I thought maybe they could help them with their bacteria colony as well.

When I put them in my home-made fry saver i was so diligent with them, and about 30 hatched, but when I went to do a water change it took me way too long and all but three survived the change in temp. so I put the others in the saver with them and they ate them. I figured, it was a miracle they were even alive and if nature was telling them to eat the weaker ones there was a reason for it.

But I am happy to report that all three are doing very well over 2.5cm and getting very plump, two of them look very dark like dad"branches" and one is very light in colour almost reddish, very cute and absolutely incredible to see them change every day! I never imagined they would bring so much joy, my 3 year old went through the whole thing with me asking how the eggs were doing and finally now everyday he asks how three are! Like I said before I originally got the pair for their superb custodial talents, but now i would rather have a Bristlenose any day rather than get another type of fish!

4 out of 6 batches hatched and grew for a month without daddy's poop. When I resettled them into the growout tank, no healthscare. When I sold them, no problem, again.

I think that the whole "daddy's poop" theory is overestimated, although I do not say that such bacterias cannot play a role in their development.
My experiences shows that there is no vital impact on the development.

But do not forget, that local conditions vary and plays a greater role. That might include poop bacteria.

I just finished a water change in their tank. It is amazing they are not even a month old and they are so big- or to me they are any ways. Mum is still in there although I am thinking off moving her in with the goldies tank again. The three are growing so fast that I think it may be get cramped in there soon if not already. Also am going to move the ottos to the guppy/goldfish tank. My hubby got 2 baby fantail goldies and I have them with the guppies- to control the population hopefully. All is well so far- a great start to the new year!

In the first few months of their lives - I would say 6-7 - they grow day by day. Then comes a "resting" period, when their growth seems to halt at around 5 cm. After a few months growth takes pace again until they reach their full size.

If you feed them well and keep a healthy variety of diet, they will become algae-buldozers full of life and energy.
Cmon, keep up the good work! Good Job

I moved mum back with the goldies, she's as happy as can be grazing happily- actually that tank is just like her happy place, that is the tank she laid her first batch off eggs, not sure what is it exactly but she's happiest in there. The Ottos are back with the guppies and I moved the fantail baby goldies into their own tank, they are growing fast. The 'three' are busy eating everything!!! Courgette, cucumber, wood, algae, wafers I also put a piece of romaine lettuce in there yesterday and they ate from it too, variety seems to be the way to go for them. Later on today am going to see if I can take some better pics just to update, all water parameters are great so far-I do find that because they eat constantly though everyday I need to clean the bottom (right now it's just a glass bottom with a few black river stones)get rid off all the poop with a net, it takes a while but they don't mind they just eat on the other end of the tank! and I do a 10-20% water change about every other day, just to keep the parameters good.

Thanks for guiding me through this process, I really do appreciate everyone's dedication!!!!! Three little Babies!!! 3335189316 It is very rare to find such dedicated and informed people as yourselves willing to take the time to guide a newbie. YAY! Bristlenose World!!! cheers

Yep, they like variety as much as we do.
I hate even the idea to eat fried chicken every day. Three little Babies!!! 270216483
