PostSubject: Help with pleco's!!!!!!!!!!!!   Help with pleco's!!!!!!!!!!!! EmptyFri Sep 28, 2012 3:13 am

My albino pleco's decided to mate without me knowing. They are in my community 55 gallon tank, with mostly live plants, stones, caves and driftwood. Dad has done his job, and I currently see 4 little guys( which I hear is not many) in my tank. This is where I need help. My friend the old owner of the pleco's says to feed them cuccumber, so I bought some, washed it well, put it in the tank, held down with a rock. The babies are staying at the top of the tank, sucking on the glass and not going near the food. Is this normal? should i worry? Should I feed them something else? how long should the chunk of cuccumber stay in the tank, before I switch it out? Please help. I love my pleco's and I want to see my little dudes make it to big dudes!!!!!

the babies will generally feed at night so i would put the cucumber in at lights out and take it out again in the morning. You dont need to put much in. A disk 1cm thick should be plenty.

In generally the babies will look after themselves. You really do not have to do much. So relax and enjoy the little swimmers Very Happy

Thanks!!!!! I will be taking the chunk out that I put in earlier, and I will replace it tonight before I go to bed, once the lights are off. Is there anything I can use rather than a rock to hold it down, its kinda a pain to take the top of my tank twice a day to get my arm in all the way to the bottom!!! Plus its pretty darn deep, up to my arm pits!!!!

I use plastic tarp hanger clips for my veggies. You can find them at any hardware store and they are only .99cents. If you look at my profile picture you can see it. And your mom or wife won't yell at you for using there forks Smile

I'm more cautious with clips after using one for a thick piece of squash in my growout tank. As the the babies ate away on the squash the clip snapped closed on one of them killing him. Help with pleco's!!!!!!!!!!!! 484291715

These clips have no springs and will stay as you set it. I don't like springs as they are metal and will rust on you anyhow. These use a plastic slide piece with notches to hold a small lever. No metal, no snap clips to break, very easy to use. I also add some fishing line to pull them up in the morning.

sorry to hear about your poor Pleco Help with pleco's!!!!!!!!!!!! 484291715

I use the Ocean Nutrition feeding clips. If you google them you will see there are no springs or metal whatsoever.
They are beveled at the top with a plastic clip on each side. so they just somewhat "roll" open. Now I just use them for romaine or seaweed.
I like the bent spoons for feeding slices as more of my fish can feed on it at the same time with both sides exposed as opposed to the clips being stuck to the glass.
