Emigrate or break the law and import some illegally. Although I wouldn't advise the second option.!!

Sorry there isn't any different options.... Red bristonoses 484291715

bristlenose are an extremely adaptive species. They are able to tolerate a wide variety of water conditions and temperatures. Given the history of exotic species getting into the Australian ecosystem and stuffing it up the government decided to ban the import of species that are able to naturalize. Unfortunately, all of the Loricariidae were on that list.

we are still allowed to own and breed those which were already in the country, just not import them.

As much as it sucks, I agree with it. While all of the fish keepers I know are responsible, the fact remains that there are others who are not. And as much as I would love to have all of the amazing variations here, I love local waterways more. I have spent the last 8 years of my life studying them, analyzing them and I plan to spend my life helping to restore them.

One day i would love to see a special license similar to the bird keepers license & journal, that allows those who have hold of one to have these rare ones imported.. A long shot but hey...

i was born and raised in hawaii, and we have that same problem. About 15 years ago i could catch a bunch of bristlenose and gibbeceps in a river next to my aunts house. up in the mountains I would find a random stream(2 feet wide) and barely 5 inches deep and randomly scoop a net and catch a bunch of baby locariddae's(i think thats how to spell it). its a real big problem there, at the same time pretty cool to catch them though

Up to a $250,000 fine and 5 years in prison for a fish...pass. Don't get me wrong, I may in fact be the biggest bristlenose fan out there, except maybe for Chasse, she is so pumped up about the little fellas at the moment! Very Happy

But i dont love them that much!

PostSubject: super red blood lines??   Red bristonoses EmptyFri Aug 10, 2012 12:28 pm

Hi Guy's, a question to those that know from one that doesn't. Is a super red something different to a common bristle nose ( I know its a different color) What I mean is, is it selective breeding of a common variety to acheive the red color? if yes couldnt we do the same here or is it a different L number?

It takes a number of years to selective breed fish to get the required traits. Yes the super red bn is a colour morph of the common and no they arent available in aus yet. BUT.... i have heard on the grapevine that there are some breeders in aus trying to make the super reds happen. Hell they might even be here, just not ready for selling yet. So far if you look around you will find that we now have L144 short and longfin available in aus. so hopefully super reds arent that far away Smile

Hi, why not just stick to local species, Australia has some of the nicest fish out there. Most of them unknown to most of the trade. Just stick to the available bristlenoses. It really is not worth stuffing up the ecology, rabbits, foxes, cane toads etc. come to mind.
I hope when I come home to Oz there is still some local ecology left.

Indeed Australia does have some of the nicest fish, and as we all know, what we can't have makes us want it all the more. That being said, there are some very beautiful fish out there that we will never have here, and I can imagine there are a lot of people in this country that have had experience with the greater majority available to us and would pay thousands at the opportunity. I poke through my L# book all the time and drool at the large snippet from the massive variety that's there and I wish I could have some of these. Though I can understand the restrictions in place, I wish it wasn't so. :P
