Quarantine / new fish process

Hi everyone.
Following up from my sick fish who fell ill soon after I got them, I was wondering what processes you use when bringing home new fish.

I always acclimate my new fish to pH / temp of new tank, but never routinely treat them with anything medication-wise.
I also quarantine them for a few days if they are going to be introduced to my community tank.

What do you do with your bn's to give them a healthy introduction to your place.

hi, I am sure others will have more experienced opinions, but I acclimate any new fish depending on the store's ph and temp to mine, if the ph is very different ,it may take a few hours ,but usually I keep my temp and ph same as the aquarium store ( I never use chain pet stores as most have tanks running on same water pump: one fish sick ,ALL tanks become contaminated.) Aquarium only stores have individual tanks on their own pumps, this is their business !! I find the fish are healthy ,but I still never take chances. I always ask how long they have had the fish I am interested in, I wait till they have had it 2 weeks ,with no deaths., then purchase and put i my q-tank ,20USg ,for 4 weeks. Always ! this way my main tank won't become contaminated with expensive and much loved fish in there. Plants also get a bleach dip 90 seconds ,good rinse, and 2 weeks in glass -not tank as most parasites can't live outside a host after 2 weeks. I just turned the 20g into a bn tank, so I won't buy any new fish till I buy another small tank and have it ready for a q-tank.

A few days is never enough time to monitor a fishes' health. Some people go 2 weeks as that is the safe time for ich, but others perfer longer. 2 weeks is the ablsoute minium.. moderators, please correct me if wrong. You will need to look for internal parasites also. Patience, it is hard but after you do it a few times , you will feel more confident you are not adding a sick fish to your main tank and see that your patience was worth it.

One more item, if you do find a problem while fish is in q-tank, you will need to find the correct and safe treatment,then when treatment is finished, start the q-time from the start all over again. Sorry for long post... HTH
