Lost my BNP to bloat yesterday

Thank you for the sticky on bloat disease. It answered all my questions regarding the loss of my favorite fish. I have my 2nd BNP in a QT now, with the same, but much less severe, symptoms.

Here is my info:

Water parameters
a) Temperature range 76.6 – 77.2, raised to 86 on 5/12 to combat tank ich.
b) pH 7.3
c) GH. 10
d) KH 10
e)Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, levels. Amm 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 10
f) Water change frequency Weekly, 30-40%, vacuum debris from top of sand

Tank set up
a) Size. 75 gal Freshwater
b) Substrate. Sand
c) Filtration. 2 AC110s, each with a sponge and biomax
d) Furnishings. Driftwood, artificial plants (silk & plastic), several aquarium safe rocks
e) Other tank mates. 11 Gold Pristella Tetras, 6 Scissortail Rasboras, 5 Neon Dwarf Rainbows, 8 Zebra Danios, 1 Calico BNP
f) How long has it been set-up? Dec 20, 2012, BNPs added mid February 2013
g) When was the last new fish added? 5/5, 7 Glowlight Tetras from QT
h) Foods used and frequency? General community, alternate every other day Omega One color flakes & kelp flakes, then freeze dried bloodworms & daphnia. BNPs get broccoli, Hikari algae wafers and Omega One green seaweed,

Symptoms / Problem description My first BNP (BNP1) died yesterday morning. He was bloated since 5/06 (the glowlight tetras were added from the QT on 5/5). It appears the glowlights had ich, as the tank came down with it on 5/06. They were returned to the LFS on 5/6. BNP2 had white poop on 5/7 and was eating normally. BNP1 was very bloated (photo attached) and was not eating, nor did he poop. He never improved and I found him dead, laying on the sand, this morning.

Action taken (if any) On 5/12 tank temp was raised over a 8 hour period to 86 to combat the ich. Fish are already showing marked improvement.

Hi,Unfortunately the problem with having fish that eat flake etc is that the bristlenoses will also eat it and in most cases it will cause bloat.Also too many blood worms can also cause it.Try giving the bristlenose some deskinned peas and some cucumber.My BNs love Tetra pro Veg crisps and do well on them.They also love canned cut green beans and also do well on them.At the moment while he is bloated try the peas and maybe a slice of cucumber too.I hope he/she recovers soon.

Thanks. He was a broccoli fanatic. They have both been eating broccoli, broccoli and more broccoli, watermelon, green seaweed, Hikari algae wafers and occasionally shelled peas. Neither would touch zucchini nor cucumber. I know they tried the bottom dweller wafers I was using for my pristella tetras. I think that is where the wrong protein came from. Wafers have since gone in the garbage. The tetras will have to surface feed as I will be getting either 1 or 2 new BNP(s), depending on what happens to BN2.

BN2 is still with us. It's been at least a week since she has eaten, so I dropped 3 shelled peas in the QT for her this morning. Last night I added a bubbler to make sure she was getting enough oxygenation and she flared at me to let me know to get out of her tank. Her belly is slightly swollen, but no where near as extreme as BN1's was.

Hi there,

I would stop feeding the other fish flake & Bloodworms for a while, this is surely what is causing your bloat.
The vegies & wafers will keep them alive I have tetras in with my BN & i just throw in a few extra wafers to keep them happy.
