PostSubject: Calico L F at day 3 wiggling in the cave   Calico L F at day 3 wiggling in the cave EmptyWed Jan 06, 2010 2:48 pm

My Calico L F babies finally hatched. This is the first spawn with about 30 or so wigglers. When will they leave the cave and what do I feed the babies. I have zucchini, lettuce and carrots on hand & I could hatch bb shrimp. This is all new to me, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Luci

Congrats on the spawnidge Luci, long fin calico's are a damn nice fice.
What date did you notice them hatch from the egg? 12-14 days "should" see them wanting to run from the cave.
What kind of cave are they in? if it's a good size to slip straight into breeder net then about day 10 I'd pick up the
lot- dad and all and put into the net, this way you won't have to worry about catching lots of little babies
down the track- alternatively if this is tank you are going to grow them out in - no need to trap them @ day 10 just
let em grow on.
cheers J

Thanks for the reply, I had no idea how long they would stay in the cave. They just hatched 4 days ago. My concern was when will they need food. I made my own breeding caves out of bamboo and a slate back. I could just pick the whole thing up and move them if needed. I have never seen a net to keep them in.

The little fishes won't need any food until day 12-14 when they start to venture out the cave , they'll be surviving
so far on the yolk stored from the egg stage, then I just feed mine crushed flake and algae pellets that the parents get.
Most Aquarium shops will stock some sort of breeder or fry saver net , you just need to get one that your caves fits in,
that's if want to go down that road.
