Im really confused, when i bought my bristlenose at the beginning of the year, he was labelled up as Albino. But most pics of albinos ive seen are much lighter in colour. Just wondered if he is albino or not? Pic below.

first of all great pic....

Iam pretty sure this is an albino but like you said its a very dark yellow almost red in colour......

This is my albino male and he is 100% albino..
Can albinos be bright yellow 1zfrgpe

when two browns spawn they throw out the odd albino's that tend to be a more yellow colour..

And if you spawn 2 genuine white's like mine then most will turn out the same colour suppose its all in the gene's and what spawns with what....

WOW

It's definitely an L144

You've managed to get a rarer BN for a lot less than you should have LOL

Now, what is the name of the shop?? Obviously he may have some other wrongly named fish LOL

yep defo l144
the albino gets called a few names like gold and lemmon ancistrus in the fancy yours gets called blue eyed lemmon ancistrus a lot but as the L number L144 the albino gets refferd to as an sp but theirs two types type 1 as spots from head to tail type 2 just as them around the head
type 1 female notice the spots full body length
Can albinos be bright yellow PICT6254

type 2 female not really the best pick hope this is of some help

Can albinos be bright yellow Empty
PostSubject: Re: Can albinos be bright yellow   Can albinos be bright yellow EmptyTue Jan 19, 2010 6:07 pm

I have some albino BN that are bright yellow, and yes they are albino and not L144.
My yellow colored BN consist of one L144 female, two golden albino males and a golden albino female. The only way to tell these golden albinos and the L144 apart is to check eye color. The males are somewhat more yellow orange than the females.

According to Ingo Seidel there are 2 types of albino, one whitish with spots and the other golden with no spots. These are separate forms of albino and if bred together will produce brown. I have also had correspondence with a fellow who had whitish spotted albinos and golden spotted albino that when bred together produced brown. It seems, (note I said seems) that whitish with spots is one type and golden with or without spots is another type........ then again there could be 3 types of albino.

I allowed the female L144 and a golden male to spawn once just to make sure the golden with no spots wasn't an albino L144. The result was normal brown fry so this is probably is not the case.

The L144 has a whitish iris and a black pupil. On occasion the iris has a bluish cast, hence the term blue eye for them. An albino will have a red pupil.

I really wouldn't have thought that L144's would spawn with sp.3( common browns or albino's), kind of plays
well into the theory of crossing what ever "black" ancistrus with common long fins to get the long fin "pepp".
Maybe it can be done scratch .

PostSubject: Re: Can albinos be bright yellow   Can albinos be bright yellow EmptyTue Jan 19, 2010 11:22 pm

My L144 isn't the real deal, it's just a dark eyed yellow color morph of the common BN as most L144 are now days.

I have done my research on this. The original L144 was a separate species, but it is now quite rare. A dark eyed yellow color morph of A. cf chirrosis appeared and that is what is commonly available. The color morph of the common BN was visually similar to the original species L144 so both became known by that L number.

The original L144 was imported to Europe and it is questionable if it was ever exported elsewhere, so if you live anywhere other than Europe and have a dark eyed yellow BN it is a color morph of the common BN. Even if you do live in Europe, the color morph of the common BN is still what most BN of that color are.

It is my understanding that the original was more of a dull yellow and not the bright orange yellow of the dark eyed yellow color morph of the common BN.

I live in the US and my fish is a bright yellow orange therefore not the original species.

The dark eyes stood out a mile. Here they are cheaper than albinos but from other posts it seems the "L144's" are more expensive in other arts of the world? Whatever their original source i don't know but we call them GBA's which stands for something like golden blackeye ancistrus. Many many people buy one GBA and one common brown and they end up breeding. Mongrels everywhere!

I wonder if any of the "supposed" L144 owners have seen this? Kind of makes sense though, a "colour morph" much like the calico or marble's - am I correct?

ok heres my take on this ive got both types of albino and have kept and bred both types and also let a female type2 breed with a type1 male and i never got any browns.
imo i would say if they produced any browns they came from the albino male which was probably bred from a breeding of a common and albino. ive had this happen to me after buying a large female albino and mateing it with one of my males i got a fair few browns so she went back to the shop and the fry disposed of. this is why i will not buy from this type of breeding. if i want to produce common browns ill breed them i believe theirs alot of cross breeding going on to produce something a little different and thats fine by me. but i just dont see the point of breeding a common and albino together becouse you know what your going to get nothing special
