| Same as Deano. I have an external canister - leave well alone - rinse one sponge in tankwater when it slows (not very often !) and that's it. | |

| ive not touched mine filter for about a month and half.....i just keep ontop with the water changes and clean the gravel alot...well once a week...and my waters always spot on.....if your tank has cycled properly then there shouldnt be much need to go in to the filter that often...it will clean itself..... | |

| External cannister: when ever the water slows/stops coming out the spray bar. Internal powerheads: usually with a water change and tank clean- every 1-2 weeks. Air powered sponges: only when they stop working-- The sponge filters are one of the best sources for good bacterias that your tank needs IMO. J | |

| always try to be ethical and logical... i have two fluval filters in my 30 gallon tank so i rinse one half of one filter one week. so in a 4 week period the two filters get rinsed once in 4 weeks. remember always rinse in water removed from tank, unlike my best friend who i spoke to last night who had been rinsing the filter once evry 3 months under the tap.... yikes.... i then had a discussion on why the methods outlined on here would be better.. | |
