hey fish friends
I have a big mystery! I have a tank of young stock this consists of
trio of l/F common
trio of L/F albino (Look to be all Girls)
a pair of whiptails
and a larger lonely orange spot male
I was away Saturday and came home late saturday night all was well in the fish world.
Sunday morning (today) I found a batch of eggs laying on the floor so
quick thinking i set up my tumbler i figured it was for nothing but i had to try
I got home this afternoon when i found eggs were in ring on bottom of tumbler
when i took closer look most of the eggs had hatched they have little wiggly tails
But i dont know when, who, how or WHAT they are.
how big are L/F when there ready to breed mine are about 7 cm total lenght
my whip tails are about 9cm total lenght
has anyone got any ideas and now what do i do with them in tumbler as i have never used
it before when will i need to feed them and how long are do they stay in there,

I wouldnt think it would be the albino longfins as 7cms TL seem a bit too small to breed. if they could breed at that size my grow out tank would be full of eggs

guess you will have to wait and see

in terms of the tumbler they need to come out soon after they hatch and begin to develop their tails. the best best is to get a fry saver and set them up in that to keep them away from hungry fish. if your fry saver doesnt have any airlift or similar to keep the water moving through it then i suggest adding an airstone to keep the water in it moving and well oxygenated. they need to be fed when their yoke sake is totally gone. What i do is put a small bit of cucumber in the frysaver daily when i think they are getting close and they will begin to eat when they are ready.

they look like they are bristlenose some have alittle brown on them and some are really yellow but they dont seem to have long tails. the only bn breeding size is the orange spot but the eggs are still a mystery.
My fry savers are full so i have some tank shuffling to do I only have bristlenoses so they are alittle safe.

Oh wouldn't it be great if they were all whiptails..Congrats on whatever they turn out to be...

No such luck im afraid it looks as if it was my L/F Albino crossed with my L/F common they are all swimming well so I should be happy but would have been happier if they stayed with their own colour but its very lucky that they surived at all so I am happy and excited as its my first L/F frys so something different

Why do you think they crossed?

there is nothing wrong with them crossing. I do it all the time tho i am trying to figure out the genetics behind the colours and the fins

out on interest, how many of them are longfin and how many are common/albino?

there is 43 hatched frys and 21 are albino and 22 are common and they all appear to have long tails
they are crossed as when i decide to split them into their own tank I noticed that I have 3 Female albino L/F and the male common long fin tends to stay on the fry saver with the frys and one of my Albino L/F is twice the size of all the L/F so im guessing the frys are hers
I am just starting and would have liked to keep breed with colour until i learn alittle more I realise that a new colour breed is made by crossing but i would like to leave that to the experienced just for now.

Hey Doug i just thought that this may be of interest to your colour genes
my mums trio Albino the 2 girls are Albino bright yellow and male is pure albino very pale almost white with red triangle on head
they had 12 live frys 6 are common and 6 are albino but the funny thing was they had 8 long fins but there is no long fin in their breeding that we know about
i was told the Male is pure due to his sickly colour and the red /pinkish triangle on he's head but the girls were breed by Albino parents by albino grand parents but all short fins
