| gday all
just drained my grow out tub and had a little surprise about a month ago i put about 100 albino bristles in there to grow out a bit more , they were all about a inch long and the standard yellow/goldish color . Now i have found a pure white one in the tub ! any ideas ? | |

| yep, its another morph of the albino birstlenose, and a rare one at that. In about 100 albinos you might expect 1 or 2. They are also very sensitive so be careful with the little fella.
see this thread for some more of the morphs

| hmmm another white one for me too.... I seem to have dropped on as curby passed 6 albino BN onto me after I visited his dwelling to collect some fish for another member on here..... And two of the six he passed to me turned white as well..... one of which passed away last week... the other is eating well, but appears to be smaller than the other albino's and is def pure white like a ghost, unlike the other's which are more a yellow colour... will try to get a picture of the white one by the side of a normal albino..... never lost any other fish in that tank before so the white small albino was the first for me.... Curby probably be a litted down hearted since it was one of his so be nice to him for a few days.... kind regards LJ | |

| My concern here is that your white fish was a standard yellow albino and then went white some time after being put in the grow out tub. In my experience that is a "red flag".
I have a pair of albinos. (yellow no spotting) they spawn regularly, but most of their fry while hatched normal yellow, turn white and die. The few that have survived, have stayed yellow.
I bought the parents as 2 inch fish from the same LFS, they are probably brother and sister, and I suspect from an already inbred line. I have a couple of albino males from another source (yellow with spots) and I will be putting the female with one of them in hopes that will solve the problem.
White fish that hatch white seem to have a better chance at being viable then those that turn white. I'm hearing of white fry cropping up more and more in albino spawns, and we know so little of what is going on genetically. I hope you will post what happens with your fish as every bit of info helps put together the puzzle.

| hmm I will try to keep you informed as much as possible....
weird thing is the one that died always seemed rather skeletal and lethargic compared to the others... I have rescued fish similar to that from the LFS and been successful in making them good fish...
infact it was probably white from the start that one, but you could hardly tell till it till it got a little older.,...
though I have noticed one of the yellow albino seems to have whitened a little over the last few months as it got bigger... this white one is eating very well and likes to chase my mollies round occasionally...
I will take a picture if I manage to get it by the side of one of the others, I am sure curby will be interested too since they were from him originally so he should be able to advise more on the albino parents...
Though from what I remember Curby's albino parents looked like very good stock and were gorgeous pleco too...
it is strange how occasionally you get one or two that turn out to be albino albino pleco....
kind regards
lj

| it is a weak fish, trust me on that. Of the 50 or so fry that i have had come through my breeding tanks that had the pure white colour i have only raised about 10 to full size. and that was with much extra care on my part. Albinoism is by definition a weaker line. | |
