ancistrus is the scientific name for the genus that bristlenose belong to. so all of the fish that we call bristlenose (common, orangespot, peppermint, Starlight etc) they are alll ancistrus.

pleco is short for plecostomus, for example a sailfin Pleco is also called a sailfin plecostomus but its scientific name is Glyptoperichthys Gibbiceps, but, it is in the family Loricariidea and the plecostomus bit means sucker mouth catfish or armoured catfish group.

just for info, A bristlenose pleco is in the family Loricariidae and in the sub-family hypostominae, and then in the Genus ancistrus, its scientific name is ancistrus cirrhosus, the ancistrus is derived from 'agkistron' which means 'hook', this referes to the cheek odontodes.

Hope this is correct, if not then someone please correct me, if it is correct, hope this answers your question Very Happy
