| At about 5cm on males will start to grow bristles (start as little lumps around the lip) whereas females do not. Hope that helps. If you have any that you are not sure of, the best way for is to help you is with pictures of your fish. | |

| Some females have bristles just around the lip area but males will grow them up the front of their noses towards their eyes also. When young they can all look the same so depends what size they are really. | |

In species were both male and female develop bristles, as they near maturity the bristles will be longer and more profuse on the males and as bristlenose stated they will develop upwards towards the eyes. BN males are usually more V shaped than females, more obvious when viewed from underneath, and it can sometimes be an easier way of sexing fish that are not quite mature. | |

| With the commons and common morphs the males-bristles, females-no bristles works but Peppermints are a different specie of ancistrus. Females get bristles but only a small amount around the lip with usually a couple longer ones at the tip. Where as the male will grow them longer around the lip and also up the middle of the nose. | |
