| ok well i have had over 30 BN in my main tank. growing out. i got them at about 3/4 - 1 inch.
some of these fish grew slow.
the probelm i have now is when i do a water change. i find at least one of these slower growing fish dead.....
what is the problem ???
i do a cold water change. i put prime in the water. the water is not aged. but i never age any of my water... i have discus too and they do fine with this water.
i do about 10-15 gallons of 70 gallons.

| It's not unusual for young BN's to grow at different rates.
You are doing about 15-20% water changes but how often are you doing them ?
When doing these cold water changes what sort of temperature difference are you talking about ?
Have you checked any of the dead young for signs that they may not be getting enough food i.e. hollow stomachs ? Is there sufficient food or are the larger dominant fish getting it first ?

| Hi try warming up the water before adding it to the tank as the drop in temp could affect small fry.As jim asked, how often do you do a water change?Do you clean the gravel regularly (if you have gravel) Is it a cycled tank? What filtration you using?
Sorry about all these questions but it will help.

| Hey, sorry to hear you are having fry casualties...
I had a rather large problem with my fry tank not too long ago that sounds very similar to what you are describing. all the general parameters were in check, food was good, temp and so on but the smaller fry kept dropping.
After about two weeks I changed water changes to 25% twice a week and let the tub drain slowly back into the tank using a piece of air tube which meant the new water mixed into the tank over about 1.5 hours and gave the fry minimal shock.
Hope this helps | |

| hi down2earth, For what its worth it sounds like shock is getting them to me as mentioned before I would slow down the water changes a little and mix the new water with with old water before adding it to the tank. | |

| Try changing the water every two to three weeks, not every week. I do mine once a month, and haven't lost any BN'S of late.
