Sounds like the tank hasn't been cycled. You definately need a filter and if i was you i would return them to the tank they came from until you have a fully cycled tank to use.How big is the tank?

Put a pre-filter on your filter, I have them on all my filters, from the hang on the back type to the canister filters, this will prevent the fry from being sucked into the filter. I also have a sponge filter in each tank also which is powered by the air pump. I used to use the foam from an aquaclear as a prefilter but that clogged up every two days so I went to a prefilter that was made of coarser foam and I only clean it every two weeks now.

20 ltrs will be way too small in a matter of weeks. you will be needing to do daily 50% changes to keep the water ok, get the little fellas a bigger tank Smile
