| Is happening right now! Stumps & Bristles are in their log, and he is blocking every effort of her escape Which is a big improvement when he would not let her in at all last week!!! When doing the water change this morning I accidentally disturbed them & they both came out, I thought bugger I've stuffed it, but 5 mins later they are back in there... YAY!! Now... Once she has obviously laid her eggs & is looking hollow again, Do i transfer her back to the main tank (4x1.5x1.5)? They are currently in my 2x1x1 spawn tank so I do not have to transfer the fry. I have 2 gravid females & another male in the 4fter. Will she get in their way or just go back to the awesome cleaner/poop machine that she is? | |

| Hi Up to you whether you move her or not. After the eggs have been laid the male does all the work. She won't bother him while he does it and is no danger to the eggs in the cave or the babies after they have hatched. She may munch on any eggs that are kicked out my accident. I personally wouldn't move the female, but if you want to for some reason, then I'd still leave the female in with the male, at least for a few days so I can ensure that she gets enough to eat and start to fill out again. Just what I'd do, others may do different. Jon | |

| Just another question...
For the last hr i have been doing an emergency water change as the ammonia has spiked to .50. I also noticed as i was doing this change that both mum & dad were swimming up & taking a breath of air. Dad would return to the cave & keep fanning. Now i have finished the change & have added another airstone, they seem better & mum is using her gills to breath again & is also eating instead of just sitting on her rock. The eggs are still yellow as whilst dad was sitting at the entrance watching me add water, I had a peek... - he is such a chilled out dude!
I have the 2 adults, a 3cm juvie and 2 1 cm guppy fry in the tank... The filter is a 1500lph and the tank size is a 50-60ltr
Ph is 7.4-7.6 AM was .5 now just over 0 slightly Nitates & Nitrites 0
Temp is 24-26
Any ideas whats going on? Both the air stones & filter are agitating the top of the water... | |

| hrmmm, interesting. any idea what caused the ammonia spike? remember that dad is no longer going top be eating so make sure you reduce the food accordingly apart from that bristlenose gulping air means (as i am sure you know) they are strugling for o2. The reason behind this is what needs to be understood. Normally, adding air to the water is the fix and it will, but i suspect the root cause is not that there wasnt enough air in your tank, but that the ammonia spike has burnt their gills a bit and this means they can not absorb as much o2. doing the water changes will help but it would really help if we knew where the ammonia was coming from, I would also be looking at adding some sort of bio booster to get the bacteria colonies back up to par All the best | |

| Well everything is happy a larry this morning with the eggs still being looked after and everyone seems happy. I think it was a case of over feeding as my hubby popped in a couple of wafers and then i did too, and a bit of cucumber I popped in some Prime last night & am gonna grab some more stability this arvo. See how we go... | |

| Another Question.. Is it normal for a gravid female to go into the log and kick the eggs as she gets ready to drop her own... I have rescued about 90% ad dad has still got 10 wrigglers stuck to the back of the cave. The ones i have in the net are starting to wriggle... How long until I know for certain that it wasnt too late for these little guys? | |

| It could be that the cave is slightly to smooth inside and the eggs were not attached as firmly as normally. T At the stage of development they were at when they were kicked out they should all hatch . Is there anything in the tank that could harm them, some fish attack fry in breeding nets. | |

| I would move your airstone into the net too they love a lot of air and a bit of current. I see the internal pointing at them but it cant hurt | |

| Wow.. I have epic spelling at 6 in the morning :/ I popped an airstone in last night... As i got home this arvo i couldnt bring myself to look & see if they were alive... Yes they are! All starting to colour up & flick around the basket I could count 52 in the basket & dad has about 20 in the cave! I have changed my substrate in my 4fter to the silica sand, washed it until the water ran clear & have put it in. What a difference! It looks really nice! Now just to put a background on & It is all done! I also found some Peat at Bunnings that is 100% natural. It is called Reko - Grow your own. It is in cube form the size of about 3cmx2cm & you get 90 cubes for $25 I have chucked 3 into each tank in a filter bag ( no room in my filters LOL) to help with the PH. My Ammonia is still playing up even though it is now Dad & the babies in the smaller tank, so i popped in a full dose of stability and prime. Lets see if that helps... Other than that... That is it i think! Once the 4fter has settled i will take another picture | |
