| honestly J over here they are classed as starlight's ...L183 Peppermint bristlenose is a massive differance from a L182 Starlight bristlenose.....let me look into this further mate but pepps dont grow to 10" a L182 has duller spots were a L183 has Bright white spots..my male L182 is a good 9 inch in length with dull spots and ive never had him referred to as a Pepp...... Like i said J i will look into this but iam sure they may be called diff species in diff country's......... Can anybody add pics please i will soon....... | |

| Not wanting to cause an uproar Curby but I'm only referencing planet catfish. L182- ancistrus punctatus (commonly refered to as peppermint B/N in OZ and probably a starlight in the UK) L183- ancistrus dolichopterus ( foto care of planet catfish) note the white seam on the tail and dorsal( hence the common name "white seam") L182 will start of with this white seam as juvies and it will fade to nothing as they mature where as the L183 will always carry these markings. I think the confusion has arose form the different common names they have in OZ versus the UK. All good. J

| A friend of ours managed to breed the L183 true white seams, and we did have one of the fry. Should still be in the tank fingers crossed, we haven't seen any movement for ages as half the tank is hidden in the corner behind another tank lol | |

| Yeah good one Curby , throw another variable in just add to the confusion Maybe your fish are L181? I am pretty sure how ever L182 in OZ is referred to as a "peppermint" J

| That would be an L182 then paulicans, L183 are in OZ but you don't see a lot of them and probably cost twice as much. Also Curby whats the deal with the gold spot variation, is it kinda like the albino gene or just a natural variation. J

| Well, we did a darned good clean of one of the tanks, and yes, the L183 is still alive and kicking and turned into a gorgeous female!! Will endeavour to try and get a piccie of her now, especially as now we have found her hiding place she's started blatantly sitting at the front of the tank lol | |

| great news angi im already looking forward to the pics... Oh and J goldspots are basicially what it says on the tin lol... As with most starlight's the spots are very white or bright white... But my species have goldspots instead of white hence (goldspot) although they are classed as starlight's due to there many spots they are also reffered to as Goldspots...which add's more confusion to the 182 and 183 mess lol.... If you siv through my pic's in L182 post's you will see what i mean... :[IMG]http://i4 | |

| That is fantastic news Angi and can't wait to see some pix( just to help with some clarification and reference) Curby I don't doubt that you could get a gold spot L182 - it just strike me as funny that the taxonimist's didn't give it seperate L number as every other variety gets a different number , especially when it concerns Ancistrus. | Here's to add to the confusion ayS, after reading an old post made by "Bregun"(another member) it's of her opinion that the "pepps"/"starlights" in OZ are actually L071 and not L182- So off to planetcatfish and what do you know another black Ancistrus with bright white spots Oh well , as long as we are caring for our fish to best of our abilities -doesn't really matter what they are.
