You can find some great deals on ebay, and I would suggest going for a more powerful filter than you think you need, as this will help keep your water parameters in the correct range.

Malberthorpe huh? Know a couple of locals from there from MANY years ago lol

why not just use a sponge filter as a back up?
I have an external in most of my discus tanks with a sponge filter as a back up

+ those sponge corner filters do a great job of culturing good bacterias- I highly reccomend these types of filter as an addition to any tank, all 4 of my tanks have 1

For all those in the UK I would highly recommend the following (although I reckon Paul would post worldwide)

http://shop1.actinicexpress.co.uk/shops/DiscusSouth/index.php?cat=Sponge_Filters

also under ebay
http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/DISCUS-FISH-ACCESSORY-SHOP__W0QQ_armrsZ1

I have Double Sponge Filter FS-3020 - Large 120 Litres in my breeding tanks which are circ 100 litres

cheers all i have a sponge filter already to be honest its not massive and the other filter that was in there isnt either so the water turnover isnt great ..

however (im a great believer in if you need something and have just reasons it will find its way to you) and as luck would have it today ive just won a tetratec in800 plus internal filter for a grand sum of £2.75 off ebay ..
all boxed prev owner only run for 1 week while awaiting their external to come and it was only 5mins down the road ..so collected it today and its up and running and a great filter ..definatly worth a look at ..now aint i a lucky sxx

just to rub it in a bit lol ..month or so ago i needed a filter to run alongside in 96litre and was gonna keep filter as emergency spare ..so hubby takes me to a carboot..not been in years .. i spot a guy with a fluvel 4+ filter for sale .."how much" i ask .."£6.00 the lot" was his reply .."but you have to take everything" ..expecting some pebbles or plastic plants i say ok and he leads me to his truck ..there on the floor are 2 tanks , a 60 litre glass one and a aqua AR380. next to it is 2 boxes ..amazed at my find i grab poor hubby and get him to carry some and come back for the rest ..
at home i start looking at my bargains ..

for £6.00 this is what was there ..

clearseal 60 litre glass tank .
arcadia starter light unit
fluvel 4+ filter
lots of different new sponges
ceramic rings media
congo aqua AR380 tank
built on back filter
2 x heaters
carrier bags of gravel
light and bulbs
thermometer
double air pump
4 x big pieces of slate
1 big rock
bag of big sea shells
breeding cave/rock
tank decs
plastic plants
clear quartz crystal cluster

and as im near the bottom of the box i find
a 9ct gold bracelet

not bad for £6.00 id have paid treble that just for the filter ..
