| Subject: cory death in BN tank... Fri Jul 02, 2010 4:28 am | |
| ok guys since my BN dropped there fry I seem to be losing my Cory with sudden death, did wonder if it was due to increase in temp due to hot weather..... or if it was due to increase in waste...... i run two filters, both fully cultured, and my tank as 10/20% water change each week..... i know my 26 gallon now as too many fish in due to pleco explosion this week... but my test strips show that all things are ok with the water | |

| Hrmmm, if the water tests show that all is good then i would be looking at the temp if you changed it...do you know what the change was?
Did the cory look like it had been attacked at all. Might have ventured too close to the cave and babies for daddy's comfort.

| Subject: cory temp... Fri Jul 02, 2010 8:21 pm | |
| i keep the temp of all three tanks perfectly set at 79/80....
however due to the severely hot weather here in south yorkshire, the temp as increased in all tanks to about 82/83....
in the last three weeks I have lost 6 panda cory and 2 albino cory, 4 guppy... all quite young......
my other tank paramters appear ok....
see below--
NO3=10 NO2=0 GH=8 KH=6 ph=7.2 Cl2=0
water temp today is 82, though thats with the heater off as were in a heatwave right now. I currently do a 15-20% water change once a week as the new baby BN have increased the population of my 27gallon tank. I dont doubt the tank is currently over populated since the BN have been heavily mating, and I in another week 30 fry will be two months old, and another 70 will be 4 weeks old!
So can't wait to off load some BN cheap if you know any local LFS what require a nice supply....
This afternoon I found a gravid guppy swimming eratic on it's side, now removed that to a separate fry tank for protection.
I did wonder if it's due to the male BN protecting his new young as... things seem to have gone weird since he started mating.
I have sand substrate which is cleaned via syphon once evry two weeks, and the tank is run by 1xFluval 4 and 1xFluval 3, of which I clean one half of the filter media once every 4 weeks.
The fish are fed on flake twice a day, and occasional pleco pellet, and algae wafer....
It appears the only fish that are with standing right now are - 1 very mature 9 month old bronze cory.....and the pleco population..
regards
LJ
Any thoughts would be helpful right now....

| Water seems fine, the pH is a bit high but not too high.
For heatwaves here i always keep a few bottles of water frozen in the freezer as well a one or two bottles in the fridge. I have kept axolotyls before and they need to be kept at less than 20 degrees C so i needed to come up with a way of keping thanks cool when it hit upwards of 40 degrees C outside.
the trick is to make sure that it doesnt get too cold or drop too fast. so when you start using them just check how fast the temp is dropping and adjust accordingly. Though 83 F is not that hot. During a heatwave my tanks have spiked to about 90 F and i go through a 2ltr bottle of frozen water in an 1hr.

| Axolotyl - aka Mexican walking fish. I have had 4 over the years. they are amazing creatures. they are technically a type of Salimander that remain in their larval form for their entire life. I got them from my local fish shop, I had to order them in though. Can get them pretty easily here in Aus Don't need sterile bottles. Just wash some bottles in hot water to remove all the old contents and wrapping. I used to use old coke bottles I found that a 2ltr bottle frozen would drop my 200ltr tanks temp by about 1 degree for an hour or so. By then it would have melted | |

| yeah, they are a realy oddball of a creature, something that actually went backwards in evolution! truth be told they are not the best things to keep here as it is too hot for them. Anything over 20 degrees C and they start to stress. I acutally used to move mine into the fridge over the really hot days. Infact they can live happily in water frozen over! they hail from mexico where they are all but extinct in the wild. They live in glacial meltwater, and as such are happy as in the firdge of course there is one other option that we havent mentioned. This is something that i have been looking for for the past few months. a Chiller. These are most often reserved for marine tanks but have use for tropical tanks in hot climates too. They are essentially fridges that cool water, generally by a few degrees. the best even have heaters built in so that you set the temo and it controls the rest bit $$$ tho:( thats why im looking second hand | |
