| I checked the name of when i purchased the ancistrus and seems to be ancistrus spp. (so it is common i think so) I tried to take some photos of them but unfortunately it is a bit difficult So here below you can find the pictures of the young on a hungry frenzy hehe. behind the cucumber you can also see the hole of the pot where the male uses as his cave | |

| Best way to count that many is to spend an hour or so and catch them and write down a stroke each one, then replace em, back to the tank individually..Why do you need to count them right now? they not near the size to sell, just curiosity? | |

| Since this is my first spawn i just was curious After when do they spawn again? This batch was hatched (wigglers) on 15/11/2010. I leave temp on 26*C. Last Saturday I made the weekly WC of 20% and i have switched off heater and the water of the WC was cooler. Temp was around 24*C. When I was ready I switched it on but no activity yet. I feed them daily cucumber, algae disc and once a week frozen bloodworms. Small wigglers also eat some bloodworms they are always hungry | |

| Subject: Bristlenose Catfish spawning periods... Wed Dec 08, 2010 9:16 pm | |
| my bristlenose usually spawn about two weeks after the first and then have a rest for 6-8weeks.
This was asked before you have more time to use the search function above. Currently doing water changes so short of time right now.
Each fish can vary greatly, and also each set up influences the spawn also....
possibly not the answer you wanted to hear right now... lol..
regards

| As you are new to it the best advice is not to force them. In time you will pick up the particular ques that they give you to trigger the spwan. When you start it is best to have one spawn at a time. focus growing out the fry and what you might find that the parents spawn again when they are ready | |

| Ah ok then thanks so I grow out my fry then. About WC should I try to make the water the same temp or a bit cooler is fine with the fry? Both fry and parents live in the same 120 litre tank. | |

| 26 degrees is where you want to be. Slight fluctuations around this are ok but aim for 26 | |

| I ended the old year with some bad news I had another clutch of eggs this time i saw it was big. Unfortunately the male kicked them out and only found 10 Now I have put them in a breeder with air stone maybe they will hatch. This happened on the 4th Day. What could be the problem? The first spawn was succesful. Each day i shine a torch in the cave to check if they are still there. This is done for about 5 seconds just to check. | |

| that could be your problem.
some males are sensitive to torching. best not to do it.
other than that it could be that the water is not suitable for the fry. I had this issue when the pH in my tank jumped owing to a spike in the pH of the tap water. the males in several of the tanks booted eggs. No point in putting the effort in hatching and rearing the fry if they just wont survive.

| well ph was around 6-6.5 and the water was black water because of tanning of the driftwood. It was always like that and I have the other batch that are still growing out in tank. | |

| It depends if that is what they were born in...if there is a sudden change that may cause the male to kick the eggs out. but that soulds like a good pH to me | |

| I has been almost 3 months and there is no breeding yet What should I do to condition them? I change daily the courgette. I also give them bloodworms every 2 weeks. I reduced some of the babies that I had. So tank has few babies left and the parents. Is there something I could do with regards the temp. Yesterday I forgot the heater off and the temp went down to 18degrees. Should have been 26. When I checked it i lowered the heater to 24 and switched it on again. Any tips on how to condition them? | |

| give them a bit more protein. when i am conditioning i give mine blood worms twice a week.
there are lots of things to help trigger a spawn and condition them. there are some fish who just take a break. just gotta keep going

| I also have some babies in the tank and obvious they will eat some bloodworms. Would that be damaging to them or they will be fine? | |

| I amnot sure as i have not had the opportunity to breed BNs yet but i'm sure blood worm is fine for the fry, just not loads as too much protein can give them bloat if you are unlucky.
Hope this helps

| I don't know how small you babies are but if they are really small and your using frozen bloodworm you can dice it before it's completely defrosted to make it a more manageble size for them.
As Doug has pointed out, only feed them bloodworm a couple of times a week. Give them a bit of time and then follow Curbys advice about coldwater changes in his article HERE to stimulate a rainy season.
