I cant say about every tree out there but defiantly avoid trees that contain sap. Also never use a branch or anything that is still green, this will result in poisoning your aquarium. Thats basically all I can tell you. Maybe someone will know more.

This is a very good question???
I use Bog wood mainly as i no its safe although you have to soak it in a bucket for at least a week..
There are other names such as Drift wood and iam sure oak can be used....

Also i would like to no were LFS get it from and how they treat it...i mean if they can find it and sell it for ££$$ then surely we can??

did some research for you,

these woods would be fine,

Oak, Ash, Maple, Driftwood, Bogwood, Mopani, Mangrove root, Redwood roots, and one a came across from canada Manzanita,

and i found this web site for you they do samples give a try WWW.MANZANITA.COM

all wood will need to be boiled and dryed out to kill any bacteria first though,

avoid woods like

Walnut, it contains toxins,
Birch, is to soft
Cedar, is coniferous wood and contains resins

hope this helps cheers
