| Hi all ive been working away for 4 weeks and the mrs has been doing the weekly water changes for me (im not saying this is her fault) i have come back home this weekend and done a water test tonight the reading are as follows
PH 6.0 nitrite 0 ppm nitrate 40 ppm Amonia 0.25 ppm
the tank contains 4 adult BN's and a good few fry also some adult RCS and also some fry
now what can be done to raise the PH fro best results not causing problems the the contents of the tank TIA Mark

| Hi,don't worry about trying to raise the ph because at 6 it is o.k,adding stuff to try to higher it will probably do more harm than good. The nitrate reading is high and although not toxic to fish at low levels it can stress them out and if exposed to it for long periods can cause illness and needs bringing down by doing water changes.
I have a few questions if that is o.k?
What size is the tank,do you have any live plants, how long since the filter media had a good rinse,if you have gravel has it had a good hoover recently, what and how much do you feed, how long has the tank been running,do you have wood in the tank?

| Hi thanks for the reply the tank is 36"x18"x12" it has bee running for over 12 months the filters are fluval 305 external with a sponge over the intake to stop fry getting sucked in this sponge is was apx every 2 weeks also the is a jhad (i think thats what it was called) 102 i very rearly clean that on tbh as it dont seem to get clogged like the 305 sponge. The media in the 305 has not been touched for a good few months as the sponge dont let it get clogged up that much. The water changes are done on a weekly basis, there is no substrate in the tank at all the bootom is clear and free from poo (for want of a better word). Ther is plenty of bogwood in the one has anubis growing quit well on it, i feed the fish every other day now and alternate cucumber and wafers i dont mind questions being asked i just dont want to start loosing my fish i have lost a few fry tho

| Hi again,do you give the bottom of the tank a good wipe over when you do a water change? It is a good idea as a bare bottom tank will have bacteria growing on the bottom. A high Nitrate reading will affect fry first and if they are dying then you need to get it down asap.Do the fish look well? Has any got any signs of anything? What you need to do asap is a good water change, maybe 50%,making sure the water is same or close to the same temp as the tank water and adding declorinator.Have you tested your tap water for nitrates? | |

| I would check the water coming out the tap, pH etc. try testing it straight out the tap and then test the same water again a few hours later. | |

| Atm i have a jahad sponge covering the pipe that takes the water out to the fluval 305 this gets blocked quite quickly is there anything else that can be used that will allow more of the wast to enter the 305 filter but leave the fry and baby rcs in the tank without sucking them up | |

| Hi again, just a few questions and sorry if they are repeats. How many adult fish are in the tank and at what size and how many fry roughly? Are there any other fish aswell? What do you have in the tank apart from wood and plants? When did this start happening? Was it after a lot of fry hatched? How long has the tank been running and is this the first time you have had this problem? I ask these questions to enable me to help you | |

| Hi again, the sponge covering the pipe is probably not helping much.If it was me I would do at least 2 water changes a week maybe even 3,depending on what the test results was.Test the water after a water change then again 24 hours later and see what the difference is.Keep cleaning that sponge regularly, probably every other day or so.If possible, very carefully wipe over the bottom of the tank with a clean bit of sponge or something similar. If you go slowly and carefully I am sure the rcs will be o.k.If you aren't happy doing it then leave it.Keep your eye on things incase there is something else going on. | |

| I don't think there is anything actually on the market for this.I did use a pair of stockings once but that too gets clogged real quick.I have no problems with my internal filters, maybe set a fry tank up with an internal filter for the future batches? Other than that I don't know what to suggest about the intake sorry.Maybe others may have some ideas for you or more help. | |

| What about trying to make some sort of fine mesh box to put round it? Fine enough for the fry not to be able to get through but not as fine as stocking or sponge? maybe use a fry saver type thing to cover it somehow? sorry I'm not a lot of help but I am trying. | |
