PostSubject: the L number thing   the L number thing EmptyMon Dec 19, 2011 7:22 pm

thanks for the advice on the other matter folks i.e. feeding however I am a little stuck as to what these L numbers mean

for example
I intend to get lemon bristlenoses and super red bristlenoses

do these share one L number or are they the same?
I believe the lemon bristlenoses are L144 but have absolutely no idea if this is the same for the super reds or if they have a number all of their own.
thanks in advance for your help on this folks
Ian

Both the lemon and super red are colour morphs of the common bristlenose, the lemon is often sold as L144, but true L144's are rarely seen and the original description does not match the lemon variety.

There is a profile of the L144 on HERE with an image of a fish that could be a true L144 as it matches the description of it being a yellow-brown colour.

yeah, Jim is right. The L144 morph of the common bristlenose is not the real L144. that has by most accounts been lost to the sands of cross breading and inbreeding.

Lemons and reds are the same species and will interbreed and it seems from most accounts that you will end up with common babies

ok now I am confused????
the super reds and the lemons are being bred from parents of the same colouring etc i.e. the super reds parents are super reds and the lemons parents are lemons, so how will i now get common bristlenose babies from them if they breed??
help???

I think Doug is refering to a Red /Lemon cross were the common gene would be more dominant producing common fry rather than a mixture of Reds and Lemons scratch.

right now I get it
to paraphrase if they are kept seperate and breed the lemons will produce lemons and the reds will produse reds
however if tthey are allowed to mix and breed across the colours then the fry would be either a mixture including common bristlenoses or (more likely) just common bristlenoses
do I have this right then folks
(sorry to be a pain in the butt folks but it's all gobbledygook to me at the minute)

You might find THIS TOPIC of interest, various members have reported what they got with different crosses.

What I know about genetics you could write on the back of a postage stamp lol!, but I think a Red/Lemon cross would produce 100% brown.
