Do BN need wood in there diet?

So i've been trying to figure this out for a while and i think that there's a lot of contradicting info out there. I want to hear opinions from this forum about whether bristlenose need wood in their diet or not.

Yes they do, in fact I'm pretty sure it is a necessity for good health, they will rasp on it and it aids in their digestion... I use malaysian bogwood

There is a theory that the lignin in bogwood could be part of a BN's diet, possibly due to the length of the gut. As far as I know there is no documented proof to confirm it.

Given that BN's will often rasp on bogwood, even a new peice that would have no algae or bacterial growth on it, then I see no reason not to have it in a tank.

It's also been said that bogwood is better for BN's than Mopani wood due to the fact that Mopani is harder and denser.

regardless, it looks good and helps get the pH right.

IMO you should use wood in the tank, even if you do not have BNs.
Why? Simply because wood gives a more natural touch to any setup.

How can tell the difference between Bogwood or Mopani. Is it easy to tell the difference as I have 2 peices of Driftwood but wouldn't no what type I have.

I use Malaysian bogwood in all my tanks, they are a dark brown in color with very even tones.

I believe Mopani is a mix of tan-blonde areas on dark brown, it is much more dense. Not 100% sure on this but they are the two types my Lfs sell.

In my opinion bogwood is a necessity for BN's. I have always had it in my tanks, and as Mary has said it looks good anyway, a natural piece of kit to have.
As to the difference between bogwood and mopani is simple, mopani looks like it has been man made from synthetic materials, it does not look natural and is very hard. More like something cast from a resin.

When I first got into the hobby all my plecos (though not BNs at the time) would die. I'd feed them veggies, wafers, flakes, you name it! It wasn't until I started adding wood that my plecs flourished.

I do have one baby BN on cholla wood and coconut, has anybody ever used these? I know the cholla wood is soft nd that they can chew it away....
