| I have a few questions, I hope you all don't mind me asking.
If you have a regular brown BN and a Long fin gold BN will they mate and if so what would the young look like??
I would love to get a pair of these long fin bn, but I don't know what mine is at the moment as its quite young but i am leaning towards a female.
The other question is if you have different kinds of plecos in the same tank will they interbreed with each other??
Sorry for the dumb questions

Ok, shortfin is dominant over longfin but it does get tricky as from what i can tell there is more than one gene at work here so its hard to apply simple medelian genetics. If a shortfin and a longfin breed then the offspring will depend on the genetic make up of both that parents. The most likely outcome is shortfin. but if the shortfin has any longfin genes then there will be some longfin offspring. WHen i cross my longifns and shortfins i get about 75% shortfin 25% longfin as i know that the longfins are not purebred and the shortfin has longfin genes.
in terms of colouration. In Aus we dont have a lot of the nicer colourations. The Gold ones you refer to is that the albino ones? If it is then they will follow similar pattern to the longfin/shortfin debate.
If the gold colouration is not albino but more like a colouration change like in the super reds then i have no idea.
Interbreeding is a complex issue with plecos as they are poorly defined as species. Often the same species collected from different sites are given different names but will interbreed. Others are called the same thing but end up being cryptic species and wont. So the common BN will interbreed with all its morphs (longfin, shortfin, albino and brown). Im not sure about the super reds or the blues or any of those as we dont have them here and haven't bothered to read up on them. any more different than that they wont. Thy wont cross with things like peppermint or Orange spots bristlenose. And they def wont cross with anything outside the Ancistrus
